is your soil flat or higher at the back? it probably landslide
first of all,
WOW dude that is an amazing piece of rock/root there.
secondly, I experience the same "problem". they're just under that single layer of substrate right? don't worry they will emerge sooner or later
correct, as what gavan mentioned, just a matter of time before they emerge out which is a good sign.

about trimming, what I found was, once you have a stalk that creeps long enough and has mature, firm roots, you can snip it somewhere in the middle and just leave both sections rooted. then they will sprout on both sides
Yup. that is a nice piece of rock (very heavy), got it from 40 Jalan Lekar.
they are just below a single layer of the substrate. thought of siphoning the top layer of the substrate to expose them.
Do monte carlo grow very slow? i have setup the tank since end of sept. (co2 injected tank)

Odyssea Evo 36 and beamswork.
All the monte carlo are bubbling when the lights are on.

Like what Gavan said, trimming it would induce it to branch. Plant those cuttings into the soil & it would take root.
cant replant as most of space is filled with monte carlo, only that they are below the substrate therefore cant see them..

Mine grew the same way. It started crawling at the bottom of the substrate and are now slowly popping above it. I haven't trimmed the clump at the middle so I guess it's a good time to do that.
It's slow growing for me as well. That clump in the picture has been planted there since first week of october. I'm fine with them growing slowly though. they seem to be a very stable plant anyways. No algae or decaying issue whatsoever.
Is there a optimal temperature for it? mine seems to rot. thanks.
