Awesome set up. I have always been very fascinated by carnivorous plants. Especially Venus Fly traps.

But a few questions come in mind..

Farm? Which farm? Do you live on a farm?
School Holidays? Are you a teacher too? I am starting to see a trend here if you are a teacher too.

No I don't stay in the farm. I have 3 kids like you. My tanks got kicked out of the flat. Rented a small place at Seletar.

I only have 2 but my wife still does get checked for ID when we watch R21 movies. So yes, maybe I have 3.

Yay! But seriously, wow. Rented a place for tanks? That is like super awesome. So no fish tanks?

Hi. May I ask how much do you pay for renting the place.

    Thinking of doing that too...

Almost done. Just a few more mini- neoregelia and it should be completed.

Yes. You need to secure the pump onto a hard stable surface.

hi bro i noticed that you have some venus fly traps halfway up the tank in ur earlier pic. Can i check how to you suspend it? What substrate are you using?

Re: my new setups at the farm.

Bro this is really an awwwwsome set up.

How do u manage the venus fly traps with the other plants? I hear that they can grow only in nutrient poor soil. I am hoping to have fly traps in my emerged set up but I have other plants that need fertilisation, and the submerged portion also has a few guppies which contributes poop... so I would imagine my watertable is nutrient rich...

my new setups at the farm.

    gid is right.

the whole point for the plant to produce those fly traps (modified leaves!) is for the plant to absorb nutrients in a novel, external route. in nutrient poor, "difficult" conditions, the plants will produce those attractive fly traps (healthy = red insides). same goes for pitcher plants and their pitchers.

in nutrient rich conditions (eg. a well-fertilized vivarium/terrarium/paludarium), fly traps will "melt" and produce normal-looking leaves.

I guess for gid's case, you really have to place the Venus fly trap either high up in the scape, or away from return flow, or attach to rock/branch

Re: my new setups at the farm.

I took a different approach with my terrarium. I did not use an internal pump and the octo-hose attachments. Only a mistking external pump and misting valves were used to maintain humidity.
A little trial and error was involved in determining the number of valves and the postioning of the valves.

Lights was also a major issue in maintaining the red plants. To keep the red plants healthy and propogating , the lights have to be turned on for at least 15-16 hrs. The height of the lights also play a big part. I have tried many types of lights and the only one that works moderately well is the 300W LED emitting the blue and red spectrum. Not very pleasing to the eyes but the plants are finally doing well.

I have attached a photo to show how it looks like with blue and red ledsAttachment 47777

Re: my new setups at the farm.

As for the substrate layout, Dennerle quartz substrate was used for good drainage. Drift wood and rocks was the piled on top of the Quartz followed bySphagnum moss. This was done to create an air pocket between the quartz substrate and the sphagnum moss.
Good for bacteria cultivation and at the same time ensuring good drainage for excess nutrients.

Ferterliser was never used in this setup.
