Check it every week before I do my water change. Renew the baking soda content after the water change.
I'd reccomend you to do water changes every week instead.
Hi all,
1) I am just curious how often do u guys check KH?
2) How often do u add Bicarbonate Soda to bump up KH?
Wat happen recently is I am face with BBA problem,
suspecting is CO2 lacking,
my PH is maintain ard 6,
so a measure(last 1 abt 4mths ago) on my KH is zero! shocking.
I do water change fortnigthly.
So now I am furiously adding soda for 3 nights oredi(still adding), KH is ard 1.5 so far.

I don't check anymore. I just replace what is logically removed with water change.
E.g. say I'm aiming for 4dKH. If I change 50% water, I add back 2dKH.
Once you have your CO2 injection rate calibrated, you don't have to measure pH and KH all the time. You just need to replace what you remove. As long as you keep KH at 1dKH or higher, you don't have to worry about pH crash. Any drop in KH is gradual, so no need big worries there either.

One more thing, KH kits can expire and become inaccurate.
I suggest you get a container of water and dose a known amount of KH. Then test the water to see if your kit is working correctly.
Since tap water might have a little KH (not noticable in my case), the measured KH mght be a little higher then your actual dose, but should not be lower.
Also curious, are you slowly raising your KH, like 0.5 per day, or did you raised more but it keeps dropping back down? KH normally shouldn't drop so fast. The only case I know is tanks with ADA Aquasoil.
Is your KH 0 because you have not been re-raising KH after water change? Or is it dropping although you have been dosing regularly??

Can also put a handful of coral chips in the filter compartment. It can provide the kH, as well as supplying Ca and Mg. I have been doing that for years. Save the trouble of buying and adding baking soda.
Only thing is that the kH will not remain constant but goes a little higher. Mine can rise to 3 or 4 dkH before my fortnightly water change.
If you are extremely particluar about accurate CO2 measurement, then use baking soda.

Pardon my ignorant, I tot KH will be ard 2dKH with water change.
I slowly add so as not to overdose, moreover I don't know the calculation(trial and error).

Coral chip may be good idea, may throw some in my (new)filter.

Only reason, too lazy for weekly change lor.
If the new water has 2dKH, then using it to replace 50% of your tank water will add 1dKH to the tank KH.
