    Hi guys,

Last year, I posted about Dennerle launching a new planted tank guide, but it was unfortunately a German Edition.

Seems like the English Edition is out now and I just got my hands on a copy. The new publication is known as the Big dennerle guide, System for fascinating aquariums. The older one was called System for a problem-free aquarium.

Here's the cover for both the older and the latest publications.

A more detailed review with pictures on the way soon! Watch for it!

    Cheers,

The Big Dennerle Guide: System for fascinating aquariums

The Dennerle guide has been an unofficial starter’s guide to quite a lot of planted aquarium hobbyists. When the revised German edition was launched last year, one wonders what else could Dennerle add to an already comprehensive guide. The English edition was launched at the end of 2004 and is now in the market for S$80.

The first impression of the new book is that it’s just a dolled up hard cover of the previous edition. The presentation has certainly improved and the feel of the new edition is much better than the previous S$30 Dennerle “product catalogue”. However, those looking for pages after pages luscious aquascape photography in the style of Takashi Amano will be disappointed as this is more of a technical manual.

The new guide features at least 28 new themed aquascapes, from the Mbuna Forest of Africa, to Rio Xingu of the Amazon, not forgetting the rice fields of India. Plant specific aquascape such as the ever popular Ricca Globes or Blyxa Meadow will surely appeal to budding hobbyist looking for a step by step reference as each featured aquarium includes technical details (Lighting, filtration, water parameters etc) as well as a layout diagram with details of specific plant placement within the tank. Even the maturity of the tank at the point of photography is also stated.

While the aquascapes presented shows an obvious slant to Dutch influences, the photography are clear, sharp and crisp, comparable to some of those in Japanese aquatic publications.

For the beginner, this book covers the basics and topics of interest would be:

    1. Location and size of aquarium
    2. Decorative materials in the planted aquaria
    3. Aquascaping basics – 10 practical tips
    4. Pictorial guide for step by step set up.
    5. Water test – the how’s and the why’s
    6. Preparation of potted plants and planning of aquarium
    7. Schedule for running in the aquarium
    8. Maintenance tips
    9. Algae eaters for the planted aquaria
    10. The role of CO2
    11. Fertilization
    12. Set up checklist for aquariums of various sizes
    13. Tried and tested aquarium plants for initial setup

For the seasoned aquarist, this book might refresh issues/topics such as terracing techniques, lighting theory and tips as well as algae management. Those who do not have the opportunity to visit aquatic plant farms will find “The journey of an Echinodorus sword plant” an interesting read.

The Lexicon of Aquarium plant showcase more than 200 species of aquarium plants in the familiar format of the older publication. I do find this format rather useful as all the plants are listed by family in alphabetical order with a photograph and corresponding icons indicating light, temperature and placement in the aquarium. Supplementary information such as origin, height, growth rate as well as propagation, are also included.

Also of interest, especially to hobbyist in the tropics, is a concluding section on selecting and maintaining suitable plants for an aquarium with a high temperature (over 30 degrees Celsius).

Obviously Dennerle products are peppered all over this publication, but not done in a distasteful manner. As a planted aquarium specialist, Dennerle touts a total solution for enjoying aquascaping your aquarium. However, alternative solutions are plentiful in the market to resourceful hobbyists.

All in all, this is a good beginner’s guide to planted aquaria in terms of setting up and layout planning.

    Some highlights of the book:

I think I saw it at the LFS in Thomson Plaza, 2nd floor, above GNC/Guardian. (Not the petshop next to the 1st floor toilets.)
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
