yep but how so i get the water commercial softeners? hmm and is adding peat moss enuff for the softening of water?
You do not need soft water to achieve good growth and health with those plants. All you need is good nutrients, ample light and good stable CO2.

i am also confused. the tanks i see growing tonina well are all low PH tank. once i tried growing tonina in my tank with PH between 6.8-7.4 and failed. my co2/fertilizer/lighting are pretty good (well still can be improved).
now i start trying tonina again. my tank PH between 6.4 to 7.0 now. 6.4 is with 30ppm co2 (confirmed using bioplast co2 testkit) and 7.0 is no co2. gravel is Amazonia layered with Onyx sand. KH is about 5. my tonina have been in my tank for 5 days. will update my result.
ADA soil seems to be able to give low ph and soft water.
Recently I hv replaced all my tanks with ADA soil.

driftwoods give some effect too, however will turn water tannic
ya however, hard to dissolve co2 in low ph low kh water. need to keep bubble rate really high...
