when tiger lotus sends a new shoot up to surface before unfurling, is that the surface leaf?
should it be left alone or cut away?

If you wish the lotus to send more shoots upwards then leave it alone, but if you want your lotus to stay in water and compact i suggest you cutting away all the surface leaves.

Surface leaves will behave like wat benetay mentioned. For me it looks nice to have 1 or 2 surface leaves. Because of that I did not cut it away. After 2 weeks on my overseas trip, I came back to see 60% water surface covered with surface leaves. Some of the plants below were quite bad due to light starvation. Cut all the surface leaves away and it never ame back leaving behind a nice bushy lotus plant.

    Juz sharing my expenrience.
    Cheers!!

    sherchoo,
does the lotus bud bloom after the surface leaf shoots over the water level and buds off? if so, think it should be quite a beautiful sight.. []

you don't get buds from the surface leaf
the buds grow from the mother plant, much like an echinodorus flower stalk

some woman once said this about men
"men aren't put there to make our lives easier, they're just put there"

floating leaves don't really serve a purpose per se
    they just ARE
it's the nature of lotuses to put out floating leaves as they are much more effective at getting sunlight and carbon dioxide

Is this the reason why my big E. bleheri always has big leaves trying to grow out of the water? Even new leaves become big in no time.

So if I now cut away all the leaves that touched water surface, will the plant become more compact?

KF, don't be like me, go and trim the cockscrew so hard that it has now stopped growing. I'm hoping that it is just resting.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

koah fong, very likely for the Echinodorus, since they tend to grow big.. my E. bleheri is oredi 2ft tall and abt 40+ leaves or more, no matter how I trim the bigger leaves, its still the same
