Took the plunge again after a 2yrs hiatus. Only this time, its a humble 2ft tank. Just started cycling the tank at 1am today and glad that there is a presence of ammonia to kick start the cycle. Anyway, just to share a few pics of my scape.

Those rocks on the dw are temporary just to keep the dw from floating. Feel free to comment.......

The front portion is pretty good. You might want to revisit your plant selection choice though. Also, you normally extend and leave your check valve (yellow portion) out of the water. You might want to reposition your equipment so as to ensure that it is nicely hidden.

Thanks. For a start, i try to avoid plants which are more sensitive. The java fern looks out of place though. Reason for the current check valve placement is for leakage detection. Any reason why it shld be placed out of water? Anyway, i find it weird that the drop checker is always at this colour. This is despite the fact that i have reduced co2 by half for more than 1 day.

The water has not been fully cycled. Water tests still showing presence of ammonia 2ppm, nitrite 0.25 n nitrate 20ppm.

Did you mix the indicator solution with aquarium water? If so, then the readings would be incorrect due to the water pH and KH already being buffered by the soil. You should use 4dKH reference solution to mix instead.

I did read abt the reference solution but i have yet to get it. I used filtered water used for drinking instead. I suppose it is inaccurate as well.

Yeah, the filtered water for drinking would have different PH/KH so that messes up the readings too. Drop checker readings are based on the PH vs KH relationship.

You definitely need to use 4dKH reference solution to mix, it has a known pH of 7.0 and KH of 4.0, so that is a standardized benchmark from which the readings can be based on.

Anyone knows what is that woolly stuff that grows and attached to the dw? Seems to vanish after a few days though. uploadfromtaptalk1433425334392.jpg

Thats just fungus feeding off organic material on the wood, it usually disappears after a while as you've experienced.

You can get those pre-mixed solution to save the troublesome mixing process.

I have notice that your check valve is in the water?
    Why is it inside?

    Re: Foray into planted tanks........again

I have since moved it out of the water but just wondering y couldn't it be inside? My thoughts are any connecting points are potential layers of co2 leakage.
