The shop has those flexible type, but the one next to it has rigid type RGB 5050 at around $15 ( including end cap ). You need to get a controller besides the power supply.
Or you can t-loan from me to try out the effect.

    Hi guys, may I ask if the 7020 LED light is able to penetrate in a 90 x 45 x 45cm (l x b x h)? 20151120_093328.jpg

I also have two parallel strips for low tech 50cm depth and 50cm depth tank for around 4 months with the low to medium light requirement plants is just sustaining, though the limiting factors maybe substrate or fertilization or all the above. I satisfy with it as I'm do not need fast growth .

Given the low cost of getting aquarium led light thru Fb group buy or taobao, diy may not bring as much saving unless your have spare hardware to use or need to customize.

7020 LED strip lights use 0.5W-1W LEDs, so i guess should be okay for lower-mid demand plants in a 45cm height tank... though if you want to grow carpet plants faster or higher light demand plants, can look at the lightsets which use 3W (or higher) LEDs, those can get more light intensity further down to the plants.

Just have to try and see, if you find that the lights are sufficient for your tank setup and plant type/growth rate, then can stick with it. If not enough, then just upgrade the lights.
