Hi I'm new to this. I'm a fan of characins and would like to have tank full of them. Currently, I have 2 SAEs, and supposedly 6 emperor tetra. 2 has died one night after another.

I bought 4 males and 2 females. 2 males died.

    1. I would like to know if my water parameter is ok for most of this species?

    2. My SAEs are very happily living in the tank. Sometimes they play alongside with the emperors (maybe identify with the black stripes). But can it be intimidating?

    3. Emperor tetra were drip acclimatized for half an hour. Is that enough?

    4. They were fully colored after being net into tank, but now the two males left are constantly hiding in the plants and slightly decolorised. The females are active and feeding properly. Seems like a case of aggression.

    5. The first one died with red bruises on the body and one pop eye, I'm not sure is it disease or aggression. 2nd died overnight also, with no tell tale signs.

Can it be the balance in gender? But even though the numbers are now 2-2 it still seem that both males are still isolating themselves. Is this normal? Any advice how I can sustain them?

    Thank you for your time!

Another of my male emperor tetra just died. Does anyone have similar experience? Is there anything wrong with my tank?

Hi! Your tank parameters are OK as Emperor Tetras can adapt to a wide range of water conditions. However, it seems a bit wierd that Emperor Tetras would show signs of aggression since they are considered as peaceful creatures. Perhaps you could take a picture of your fish and post on the forum so that we can understand the situation better? You can seperate the females and males so that you can zero in on the cause.

Also, were the males in healthy condition when you bought them? Maybe they were sick when you purchased them but only showed signs after you brought them home?

    Re: Emperor tetra question (newbie)

They were healthy and active. Even the first time I fed them after they entered the tank around 6 hours later, they were behaving normally and eating.

I didn't take a photo of them, and they have no visible spots and so. Didn't surface to breathe as well. The only observation is that a dominant male keeps chasing the other males.

After a week, I'm only left with the 2 females and they are living quite happily now.

Maybe you can try just keeping females to see if the absence of males makes any difference. Anyway, it's good to hear that your females are residing happily in your tank! ;-❩

Here's one of them. Hiding amongst the plants as usual. Does it look ok? I added a few glow light tetra and they seem to be going along well.

Yea hope they will stay happy. They have witness the death of 4 males. Haha.
