fine sand as planted substrate

I managed to grow HG on fine sand from NA, I think should be alright. But it gets dirty easily

dirty? how so? well the sarawk sand is grey is maybe less obvious.

perhaps.. at the start you wouldn't notice it, its after a few weeks especially from all the pooping around

I agree with you. Unless you got no place to spend the money, then use the ADA sand

if you look at Amano's tank, you will realised the portion with fine sand is left untouched.

Not sure about what happens after a couple of months from initial planting but Aquarium Design Group sold them under decorative sand. Just use flourite...a good substrate and no need to add anything in at the base.

ha ha I am interested in the Sarawak Sand for use as photo tank substrate, as it is less reflective than Lapis and not orange like Dennerle. It's a nice neutral grey

here's the ADA catalog for Substrate but here it seems the gravel is brownish rather than grey. It looked very grey at Keong Seong. Alternatively can consider Nile sand.

I have to agree, it does get very unsightly after a while. I used to grow HG in a 1.5ft tank with fine sand, looks good initially but after a few yamatos......the poop..... also make a mistake of putting baby mollies in there, coz when they grew bigger, they keeping pulling out strands of HG. HG don't hold well in fine sand.

anyone know how to clean the ada substrate in a mature tank??? planning to change to ADA africana soil.... but afraid that it will be very hard to maintain... anyone pls help
