Yes, that is a nerite snail, one of the larger variants... usually labelled at most LFS as zebra nerite.

Hi a bit out of topic...bought 2 previously and appear to die within the week. Any advice on keeping them alive? Thanks

I have nerite snail and zebra snail together. I notice that zebra snail is very actively moving around. I guess it is more efficent in clearing algae than the smaller nerite.
It is just a bit ugly when u see the big fat snail on the tank wall.
I used to have 2 of these too! But they didn't seem to survive the moment I put them into the tank...
UA, is this under nerite family too?
The ones on the right are tiger nerites

Yeah, all those are variants of nerite snails... the ones we usually find at most LFS are the common types, there are alot more variants with different colors and patterns.
Here is are some good photo examples of other variants:

There are also different color and pattern variants amongst the smaller horned versions too:

I had 3 types, Zebra, Horn, Tiger. So far I found that the Tiger ones are the least hardy. Not sure why, but they always turn upside down and died. Zebra and Horn are doing great, and Zebra had been laying the Sesame eggs. Horn are growing bigger.
What the.... so colourful la ! Very nice ! What is the nerite called at the below left hand corner.. like flash pattern
Are we supposed to drip acclimate the snails before adding into the tank?
I think that is called zig-zag nerite or something.
Those are from online threads in other forums, not mine.
Majority of mine are the common black/yellow striped horned nerite snails, they are small in size so can easily climb on plant leaves to clean them, truly the algae cleaning workhorses of my planted tanks. I quarantine them to ID their gender, then separate the males and females... males are put in display tanks, females are put in grow-out/outdoor tanks (or given away).
Btw, LFS like Aquarist Chamber and Green Chapter have imported and sold those colorful nerite snails before, just a few months back both of them had stock of the colorful variants. Maybe you can check with them if they still have stock.
Frankly speaking.. AC snail is super expensive. Their price is like $6 per pc. I saw in C328 or Y618, they are selling tiger and zebra is 0.70 per pc.
I not trying to compare.. but maybe it is me.. i wont spend $6 per snail.
Yes, i will try to do that.. if possible. For me, i have tank with PH 5.5, 5.0 and 6.5 three tank with difference water parameter.
So far i using drip method, they are surviving well. Only encounter one or two death. The strange parts of nerite snail, sometime they will go into hibernate mode. Stay one corner for days before moving around again. I would say that.. Nerite also need to well fed by cucumber, carrot, etc etc.
Its good to drip acclimate the snails before introduction into a tank, just like with fishes and shrimps.
For me, i just place them at the edge of the water surface so they are half in/half out of the water, the active ones will attach on to the tank glass. They will usually sit at the waters edge for a while to get used to it... once they are comfortable, then they will proceed to crawl down into the water and resume grazing.
They do much better in tanks with higher pH, their shells don't corrode over time due to the acidic conditions and overall tend to look nicer.
