    Did you recently put the piece of driftwood in? Either way it's most likely either a bacteria bloom (highly likely) or biofilm. Both should be completely harmless to the tank as a whole however it's no aesthetically appealing.

    spot on, the wood had been in the tank for less than a month.
    Agreed on the aesethetical part and I believe it will worsen over time.
    Is there a way to remove the whitish film permanently?

    It will eventually go away. However right now you can try and just clean it up with your bare hands and keep up with water changes.

    Put the driftwood in a enamel or staynless pan and boil it for a weil.
    Or, put it in water with an amound of algaecide for a day or so.
    Succes

    What you can do too is this;
    Buy Hydrogen Peroxide (40%)
    Fill-up a bucket of water and ad some (very carefully!) Hy.Peroxide.
    Maybe 20 to 25 ml. After a while it start to effervesce and that means it works.
    Hydrogen peroxide burns your skin!!!

    Easier way is buy a syringe then fill the syringe with Flourish Excel

    1)Turn off your filter
    2)Spray the Excel on the wood wait for 15 mins before turning the filter on again
    3)If you have shrimps they will go over an take care of them.
