    Hi,

I intend to setup a 4 feet size planted tank, and need the following advice on substrate volume from similar setups:
    a) Approx how much substrate do I need to prepare (in kg), and what is the depth of the substrate?
    b) On top of substrate, I intend to lay over black sands for cosmetic reason; Apporx how much black sands is needed (in kg)?

    thank you

Hi, For a 4ft flat layout with standard slope towards the back, 5 to 6 bag of 9L ADA aquasoil should be more than enough.
As for your plan to lay the black sand, I would not do that as eventually it will get mixed with the soil.
But after all, it depend on the type of scape you trying to achieve.

Re: Substrate - Preparation for new setup

Just did my 4ftx 2ft X 50cm height tank. Below is the material I used

    1. Ada Amazonia : 9L X 5 bags
    2. Seiyu Rocks : 50kg
    3. ANS bright sand: 5kg X 3 bags
    4. Black Lava Rocks : as base for the slope: 40kg

I still have balance of 35kg of lava rocks 3-5cm. Let me know if you need them. Cheap cheap

I don't think it's feasible for black sand to be laid over the top of your soil especially for planted tank. 1 wrong step and everything is mixed together. The soil itself should be dark enough to create contrast
