You can try taking the wood out and boiling it to leech out most of the tannins, then place it back in with water change. Otherwise, it might take forever.

Hi all,
Recently I setup a new shrimp tank meant to keep CRS. Now the tank has been set up for 1 day and cycling. But my bonsai driftwood is starting to leak tannins into the water.
From what I read, tannins is not harmful, just that it will affect the pH.
Is it advisable if I use activated carbon to try and remove the tannins while the tank is cycling or do I wait till the tank is cycled before I do anything.
Thanks!

I had the same issue.. Tied spiky moss on it and left it to cycle for 2 weeks with alternate days water change of 30%. Eventually the tannins cleared off. Only intro crs on the 3rd weeks after water checks..

Thanks for the advise, but I will patiently for my tank to finish cycle before adding in purigen.
Anyway, sharing a pic of my tank!

Anyway im also a green horn in this hobby. Trial and error! It has been 2 months since my crs shrimp tank setup.. So far intro 17 shrimps with 4 casualties. Learned my mistakes.. Never never wash filter media all at the same time.. And never use tap water to wash. Sudden drop in good bac kill 4 of my shrimps.. Anyway sharing my pics too.uploadfromtaptalk1468334035362.jpguploadfromtaptalk1468334047213.jpg

This was taken on 09 July 2016 - Day 1
Don't know why the attachment is not working and I cant edit my post.
Based on your tank setup, it seem alright to me. What is water parameter? PH, KH, GH and TDS? Just be careful of that HOF, even with the sponge the shrimplet might be suck in. Unless you use a very fine net to tide onto the intake and then put on the sponge.
For shrimp setup, it is better to use UGF setup.
your tank looks good. Is that the cactus wood in the middle ? Any use for that ?
hi, that pic was taken on day 1 so it wasn't that bad yet. I will try to take a picture of the tank when I'm home.
Im using the eheim 2213 coupled with hailea hs28a chiller.
I did did a test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate yesterday using sera test kit.
ammonia : 10mg/l
nitrite : 1.0 mg/l
nitrate : 10 mg/l
this was on day 4 of the Cycling process.
Those are Cholla Wood. It's the skeletons remains after a cholla plant dies. It is a soft wood which provides a food source for biofilm that shrimp will feed on, similar to what leaves do. It provides hiding places for shrimp after they molt or when they are feeling vulnerable. The wood will eventually break down and disppear but it will take at least a year for the thinnest pieces.

The tannins are pretty intense..lol. Suggest you do more water change.

Waiting for the cycle to complete before I do water changes.
My glosso seems to be doing well even without co2 or ferts!
This is on Day 6 of setting up the tank.
The glosso in this area seems to be 'joining hands' together.
Btw, is there any way to edit my first post or thread title? I dont seem to have the edit options available for first post.
Day 7 - 16 July 2016.
Test several parameters today, seems like no changes.
PH - 6.5
Ammonia - 10 ppm
Nitrite - 1.0 ppm
Nitrate - 10 ppm
Tank temperature - 26 degrees
I'm using the sera test kit, 10 ppm is the highest it can measure.
I been dosing BT-9 with Benibachi active water according to the instructions on the packet, hopefully can see some improvement next week.

Let it cycle for another week, then you measure the water parameter. Once you see nitrite reading, probably you can on 2nd stage of cycling. Once finish cycled, you will see high reading of nitrates, then you do water change. The parameter like Ammonia, Nitrite and nitrates reading are constantly stable 0, then you are good to go for livestock.
Below is my cycling milestone, i let it cycle for a month or so. Must make sure it is really stable.
It should have No2 and No3 spike, maybe i miss it lolz.

Haha, nice chart. May I should use it for my own tracking.
Took another reading today.
Day 12
Ammonia: 10ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 0ppm
Currently the tank water is cloudy, so I assume it's a bacterial boom but there isn't any nitrite or nitrate reading.
From the looks, seems like the tank have not started to cycle yet.
Everyday just sit and watch the plants grow for now.

Day 14
Ammonia: 10ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 0ppm
Cycling seems to be stalled, wonder if it's due to high ammonia count.
Did a 60% WC today and remeasure ammonia. The solution in the vial seems to be lighter in color, probably 8ppm of ammonia.
Day 16
Ammonia: 10 ppm
Nitrite: 0.5 ppm
Nitrate: didnt measure
PH: 5.5
Seems like only slight increase in nitrite, I am thinking if the PH is causing the bacteria to be mostly dormant.
Any safe way to increase the PH?
I also have multiple orange spots on the corner of my tank. Anyone knows what is that...?
Wow... How did u get ph5.5? I read some where saying when ph too low (iirc <5), it will be bacteria free.
