hope you have found a cure to it
Can any anyone help?
My 6-inch Pacu fish has a peculiar malady which causes it to suffer pain. When it swallows any food, it will immediately show signs of choking, as though the food is causing it extreme pain. For this reason, it does not eat anything anymore. But whenever it tries to eat a small piece of food, the same thing happens again.
Any ideas what could be the problem? I am at a loss, as it is my favourite fish.

If thats the case u can try looking around the gills to look for any suspicious particles.
I feed live fish to my oscar once and it stop eating for the next few days.. Den i found out that the fish was stucked at the throat area.
What i did was using the pail of water containing the fish tank water, blast with air pump, scope the fish up and hold it firmly with a rag. Using a pincer/tweezer i remove the dead fish choked inside the throat.
That was the only choice since it stopped eating for the past few days and eventually its going to meet its end. Since u are prepared to loss the fish, i think u can give it a shot and i hope the best for u.
Ps my oscar was pump size, around 12cm

thank you Genki. Appreciate your utmost response to the life of this small marine creature.
how's your fish doing now tetrakid ?
U might wanna taking using touch light and chopstick method to look through the mouth.
Not sure whether it can be applied here as i know some koi fish and arrowana keeper operate their fish in such method to find foreign object
Or u can try this method in the web.

Thanks for the help Genki.
Now I remember, it may not be the food I gave it but maybe it is something else. A week before,, it must have eaten 3 Green Tiger Barbs and one Angelfish in the same tank, as those fish disappeared when I fed them in the morning.
Anyway, since I have zero experience in handling fish in such operations, I am afraid I may make its condition even worse.

Tiger barbs are full of spikes and bones... Try adding some aquarium salt and u can try some lfs for some drops that helps to recover those inflammation.
Alternatively u can try flooding ur tank with boon aka sea monkey.
Cheers hope it helps to save ur wallet and ur fish

Update: I have put it down (with the ice method) as it showed signs of unbearable pain and complications.
Perhaps it is well that it happened this way, since I might be faced with a much bigger problem later on when it grows to 18 inches.
Actually I had all this while been mulling over how I will be able to resolve the problem arising from it's growth. I had thought of eventually giving it away to someone who has the means to keep it, since this particular Pacu is a rare specimen of its kind on account of its unusual fins (see my gallery).
I can now see that this is the kind of problems which keepers of bigger fish can face which I had no idea of before. This incident alone has made me given up keeping any big fish again.

Ya, I have been looking around the shops, (but not farms) and I find that usually, the fins are different from this configuration, so I bought it, as it is the only one that is so special in the crowded tank of Pacus. It was about 1-2 inches when I bought it.
If you noticed, the small fin on the back near the tail is missing too, while other Pacus have it.
