Looking really good. How are the discus doing with your current regime of water change?
With a new job, it became impossible for me to keep up with the number of tanks that I have. So my 4 ft tank and all the other small ones in my room were decommissioned. But I have an never before used 5 ft tank, and with that I decided to just set it up.
I saved the following to re-use:
- chiller (Old and stuck at 27C)
- canister filter
- 4 ft light
- soil
- driftwood
- CO2
- rocks
- all the nanas, ferns and crypts
I bought:
- lily pipe
- power head to create water circulation
- fertiliser
- Amazonia X 4pkt
I spread half the fertiliser on the glass bed, put about 10cm of old soil above that, then the remaining half of the fertiliser followed by Amazonia as the top layer. Since my 4ft light was not long enough, I decided to place it to one side of the tank, and planned on placing the plants under the lighted areas.
For those that followed my previous posts, I went with my favoured modular aquascaping method, with very few plants actually planted into the soil. About one hour of arranging later, it was just about done. From my experience, looking at it for a week or so will allow me to make minor adjustments with the positioning before everything was set.
So in the following weeks, I made the following minor changes:
- bought more nanas and ferns to place on bare areas
- some red plants to just add a splash of colour
- created more foreground space for a balanced look
Here is the final (though I think that is optimistic!!) outcome
5 ft tank
I don't foresee myself doing any maintenance on this other than occasional water change and adding liquid fertilisers. Light is turned on only 4 hrs a day to prevent algae growth. CO2 is 1 bubble per second throughout the day. The dark areas where the lights do not reach accidentally gave the tank a sense of depth. I have about 25 rummy nose, 2 discus, 2 white cloud mountain, 2 SAE and about 100 cherry shrimps in there.

Congratz on the 5ft tank ! Just a reminder , if you need flow , do not use the lily pipe . But if you need to have extra flow of water , get a wavemaker instead , preferably with a controller , so that you could adjust the flow you want .
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.

Very good layout for a very long tank bro! Would love to see updates.
It's been three months and I've made some changes. Some of the ferns did not adapt to the Nee tank well and became brown. These were discarded.
I put a wave maker on the top right of the tank for surface agitation. The leaves moving with the waves is quite a nice sight
There were some patches that were quite bare so some more plants of the same variety was added.
I bought some plants that were planted on a mesh and placed them in the foreground. It seems a bit out of place now so I may move them. I'm not sure what's the name of the plant though
i bought a few stalks of bright red plant and placed them just off centre to break the predominantly green Colours.
My narrow leaf java fern which which used to be very Long now shrank to half its length!! Hope it grows out again
i put in six golden algae eaters
Here is the pic after three months
5 ft tank
Nice! Looks like you had added some plants and shifted some.
