Also curious how members here manage their rescape process and still minmize damages to livestock and plants? Especially for 3 feet and bigger tanks where the process of tearing down and setting up new scape again may take days....not to mention week days are work days. Any best practices or process steps to share?

Re: Tank rescape - how do you handle the livestock etc

I just did a rescape of my 3ft tank.

    What I did was

    1) Remove all visible livestock first
    2) Take out all the hard scape and mosses and ferns etc
    3) Unroot all the plants as slowly as you can
    4) if you are intending to sell the plants, pack them nicely. If you are intending to keep some of the plants, also pack them nicely.
    5) Fish out any more livestock. Shrimps are the worst... you will never get all of them out. Just minimise loss.
    6) Drain as much water as you can.
    7) Scoop out all the soil/sand etc with a scoop. (save a small tau huay tub for the cycling of the next tank)
Fill with water again, and this time use the hose to drain out the remnants of the soil/sand and make sure it drains into sewage pipe.
    9) Use lemon to scrub or use Chlorox to remove algae stains. Use lemon or vinegar to remove the calcium deposits on the top portion of the glass
    10) Because of the chemicals used, I fill and drain the water out 3 to 4 times. Then add bucket loads of anti chlorine and Seachem Prime.
    11) Dry it out for a few days.
    12) Start your new rescape

    Steps 1 - 10 takes about 3 to 4 hours to do.

Where do you keep you livestock while cycling the tank? I am thinking of re-doing my tank too but I don't know where to keep my livestock. Will they be able to do well in a pail with filter on for about 2-3weeks?

They can only do well for 3 to 4days. You may need another tank.

I normally sell or give them away with those who purchase my plants.

If they are expensive fish eg. zebra oto, red coral pencilfish etc, then you will be better off getting another tank using the same water and using an oxygen pump. Get you by the next few days. No more than a week

i kept fishes in a pail for 2 weeks while i was rescaping the tank. Just use back the aquarium water and filter and air pump. Minimum feeding and cover the top to minimize light in but left gap for air to enter. Suffer some torn fin on the fishes after the 2 weeks due to cramp living space in the pail.

What's the rationale for minimizing light into the pail?

less light = pail will be dark = less activity of the fishes

IMO, live stock can be kept in the pail / temporary holding tank as long as you put a basic filter (internal filter/hangon filter with mature media) and airpump to maintain good oxygen level in water.
Just similar to what fish shop normally do for their live stock.

get a toyogo box to keep the fishes, alternatively get an extra tank to house the fish and have excuse to add one more tank..

Re: Tank rescape - how do you handle the livestock etc

Thanks Phillipians for the detailed steps. I just finished my scape last week and missed steps 9-10 above! Took me 3.5 days from start to end not to mention the backache.....sign of getting old!

I've used a toyogo tub in earlier scapes with a sponge pump and old tank water and fortunate that the fish survived in all cases....most still with me. Only thing I noticed is they were more skinny probably because I minimise feeding.
