new 5 gallon setup. 40cm tank.
cycled for 1.5 weeks (low tech e.g. no CO2, but add shrimp safe plant fertilizer)
currently 5 cherry shrimps in it.
ADA Colorado sand substrate + Driftwood / rocks + nana / fern / moss

would like to add 'some' clean up crew now. did some research and i can easily get these from my LFS
    - Amano Shrimp
    - Nerite Snails
    - Siamese Algae Eater (SAE)
    - Otocinclus Catfish
    - pygmy cory

moving forward: i wish to stock either A) or B)
    A) 2 school (5 qty) of nano/small fishes = total 10 fish (e.g. Endlers, blue eyes, rednose, neon, cardinal, rasbora)
    B) 1 school (5qty) of nano/small fishes + 3 bigger fish (e.g. molly, Guppy) = 8 fishes

    my tank

my ideal B) setup : a school of fish and 3 main bigger fish for contrast

Re: Suggestions For Clean Up Crew for 5 Gallon tank?

my suggestion will be as follows:

    1 Nerite Snails
    2 Otocinclus Catfish
    3 pygmy cory
4 Amano Shrimp (will grow big)
5 Siamese Algae Eater (SAE) (will grow big and aggressive)

for option A, Red nose (rummy nose)will grow big and not much space to school not so nice for a small tank.
    you can consider Amber tetra

for option B, both fish multiples easily unless you get only male fish.

thanks for the info. i posted this on fishlore, they also recommend nerite snails.
i want to get pygmy cory too since i using sand and they stay small.

option A and B are just what i had experience with, if got other types of suitable fish, pls let me know.

SAE doesnt belong to your list, they grow very big(for your tank size) and very fast swimmers.

If cardinal and neon tetras are on your list, perhaps you should just go with cardinals as like what fireblade said. They really bring the contrast from the fauna. As for the clean up crew maybe you can try ramshorn snails as they kind of blend in with your current tank and they are good glass polishers, but the rest of your suggestions are good enough.

Keep the bioload low bro! Small fishes and small algae crew like cherry shrimps and maybe one nerite snail and a couple of otoclinclus.

That way you can be lenient on water changes should you get lazy on some weeks.

Re: Suggestions For Clean Up Crew for 5 Gallon tank?

fishlore lao jiaoS oppose me to get oto fish and pygmy cories stating that both types need shoal and my 5G tank is NOT suitable at all.
i listened and in the end got 2 amano + 5 cherry + 1 nerite snail.

i wanted to stock 2 schools of micro / nano fishes AGAIN they oppose said 5G not enough for even 1 school of fish,
i argued and in the end they suggest MAX 1 school of CDP (celestial danio microrasbora galaxy) = 6 qty

    i was thinking of
    - clown killi x5 or CDP x5
+ 1 scarlet danios (i got personal love for this fish)

any other type of schooling fish to recommend?? i know neon/cardinal tetras may be nice but aren't they too common?

[my research - went around LFS and found these fish types to my liking]
    clown killifish
celestial pearl danio (a.k.a Microrasbora sp. 'Galaxy')
(Green circled) fish - see 1st post image
    German blue ram
    white cloud mountain
    scarlet danios
    albino neon
    Norman’s lamp eye
fire goby - (aquatic avenue at redhill got sell small version like 1.5 inch long)

It's your tank. Don't let other people's view of ethical fishkeeping stop you from having the tank that you desire.

Re: Suggestions For Clean Up Crew for 5 Gallon tank?

If the cherry shrimp survive and start to breed then there is no need for the Amano shrimp or any bottom feeders. In fact they'll start to compete for food.

Small fish like the pygmy rasboras and ember tetras would do great in a tank this size. White cloud mountain minnow prefer staying on the upper levels of the tank so you could look at those too, They make the tank more lively.

For algae cleaning pick either otos or netrite snails.
    Suckerfish no eat poo poo.

Re: Suggestions For Clean Up Crew for 5 Gallon tank?

IMO, with your tank size, you can stock:
    - Existing Cherry Shrimps
    - 2 Otocinclus
    - 10 spotted rasboras / mosquito rasboras

That should be nice enough. Molly / guppy might attack the small shrimps in your tank, so it is not recommended.

C328.. but one thing for the snails, they will lay eggs even they will not hatch. But to me it's unslightly. I have 3 in my current nano tank. For my new tank, think I will skip them and use more oto fish.
