Neon tetra not shrimp safe. I had a small full of planaria so I added tetra to eat them but I saw with my own eyes a tetra attacked a junior sized shrimp and it stucked in its mouth and I quickly tried to save it. It swam ard for a while and finally spat the shrimp out. The shrimp nvr made it. I removed all the tetra and no fishes from then onwards. Well, that's what I saw but alot of ppl said tetra shrimp safe so it's for you to decide

It depends on ur scape and tank size. So if it's 1ft I think 5 tetra with dense plants like mini fissiden then should be OK...if it's quite bare and smaller tank....the shrimp will be fish food

Thanks, will keep that in mind. Planning to introduce shrimps first after the plants/water stablised. Then fish... anyway, fishes will be added in much later. Will do more research on them.

As for my scape... not doing much. A sample video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQGu17ILwwQ&t=93s of what I'm looking forward to.

Right now I am planning my buy-list
    ANS Opticlear 60W (60x45x45cm) or 60M (60x30x36cm)
    Eheim Classic 350
    more to add soon

I will go for ANS Opticlear 60W (60x45x45cm)

    your filter looks decent enough

as for fishes, get fishes that are even smaller then neon...
to a fish big or small, shrimps are food to them...if you want to breed shrimp, then don't keep fish...

next to think of is your substrate and light and deco... go for driftwood instead of rocks in shrimp tank...

Due to budget (about SGD$500), will be getting the 60x30x36 and downgrade the filter to classic 250 or stick to 350?
It will be my first tank. If successful, might consider a second tank just for fishes

Can anyone recommend me a list of must have water treatment chemical to get?

how much difference are the 2 tanks?
get your basic equipments right the first time and you will safe more money in future.
as for filter, maybe you can look for 2nd hand ones... it is much more cheaper.

for me I will recommend nutrafin aquaplus for the time being.. don't add too much chemical unless necessary

Noted with thanks. Will not consider second hand stuff especially electronic stuff.

According to their website, $170 and $80

Actually do understand the reservations on 2nd hand stuff but sometimes there are good deals also.

Yah, hunt around on carousell you probably can get Pro3 in good condition with media under $200.
Not taking credit away from the Classic which are the workhorses.
But the pro series have a cut off valve which helps during maintenance and also save money if you need to get those quick release separately later on.

Re: Newbie here - Need help for low tech no co2 tank

For beginner, i would suggest to go for ANS 60M tank. Reason is the 60W has wider footprint and you will very likely get poor water circulation with single water pump (canister in your case) which may get more algae problem over the time. Although water circulation can be improved by adding another internal water pump, but it will add up the purchase cost and electricity, not to mention how you would want to hide it for not disturbing the view of your hardscape.
On the positive side, ANS 60W give you more depth which is more room to improve your overall hardscape.
So, the choices still with you. 😄

Re: Newbie here - Need help for low tech no co2 tank

Will go for 60M with eheim classic 350 and up aqua pro z series light.

Intending to keep shrimps and neon tetra but might replace tetra with other shrimp friendly fish

Got a list of hardy plants to get but not sure what I can found tho.

Anyone knows where I can find VIV lily pipe 12mm (north east area)

Re: Newbie here - Need help for low tech no co2 tank

Any reason for green element lighting? So far I have been browsing this forum for list of to-buy which I will start purchasing next week.

To SantaM, main reason to have tank is to bond with my two daughters 8 n 3yo. They wanted pet and fish is much easier to care for compared to small animals like hamster or dog.

I am recommending what works for me.
for aqua pro z series light, I find that the coverage is not enough but I did not try it...
16x3W led is good to penetrate and coverage for my tank.
those small LEDs I find it simply too weak for planted tanks.

Re: Newbie here - Need help for low tech no co2 tank

We are in the same boat. My 1ft tank is initially to introduce pet to my sons. Then myself a 2ft tank...
Well, UP aqua pro-z lighing likely the bare minimum requirement for low to medium light requirement plant. Another alternative and better feature lighting is chihiro a601 for 2 ft tank, as it has dimmer for controlling the lighting output. Both UP aqua and chihiro are selling at reasonable price and find it very suitable for beginner.
As you go along with the journey and acquire more knowledge about balancing the eco system, then you can switch to higher ouput lighting for those more advancing high light requirement plant.

Re: Newbie here - Need help for low tech no co2 tank

Thx guys. Will look around for better lower cost led lights. After reading about A601... comments quite positive about it from other users and it's within my preferred price range.

Just bought the eheim classic 350 for my 2 ft tank. Like to ask what kind of media should I get for it? Any recommendation for bio media like brand and type?
