This is my first post after many years and my first planted tank on sand and without co2. Can anyone help me identify the plants behind? Are they Java ferns?

    Thanks for the reply!

I noticed the leaves were green but had black spots on them after a few weeks. Are they fungus?

Hmm, could be algae or most likely some sort of nutrient deficiency.

    Re: First planted tank

I was told the black spots in java fern leaves are the pores. The shop owner also told me to get some SAE to eat algae but after reading the forum, I am now worried because I had 4 1.5in SAE and I read they eat moss instead of algae...

    Re: First planted tank

This is due to lack of nutrients. I read somewhere that it could be due to lack of CO2.

These would be the "spots" that new growth sprout from.

SAE do grow quite big, if there's not much algae they'll start grazing on mosses. Try feeding algae wafers? Or you can try nerite snails , ramshorn snails or some types of shrimps to control algae.

Awesome setup. Ferns are great additions to any tank.

    Re: First planted tank

    Some updates.
I got some moss and decided to create a moss wall. However I noticed 1 neon tetra died on day 1 after the wall was erected and another died on day 2. Not sure if it's caused by o2 deficiencies...

Another look at e moss wall. Anyway does anyone know of any moss that's not green? Eg red moss.
