    Hi there,

I notice hair-like green colour algae on the tank surface. Can someone advise how one can remove such algae?

    Thank you.

You can remove it with chemicals but it will grow back. Cause lighting problems, nitrate or decaying matter in tank. Overfeeding.

    Hi Ernis,

Thank you for the advice. I am trying to think of other non-chemical methods. Will nerite snail helps? I do not think is overfeeding as I feed very small amount once a day. Lighting is about 5 hours each day. It could be nitrate or decaying matter in the tank though.

These ones aren't that bad... Compared to BB or Hair algae. You can try dosing excel as a long term solution. Excel does help ward of algae... Especially if the algae isn't the hard to get rid type. Currently toying with the idea of an algae scrubber. That really helps though.

I wouldn't worry too much about that algae as it is hairy and apparently growing only on the water surface, which makes it a simple matter of lifting it out occasionally with a stick. I always regard any green algae as symptoms of a healthy tank, provided the tank is well-oxygenated. I would simply remove excess algae as part of regular maintenance.

    Hi all,

Thanks for the advice. The hair-like algae are on 3 sides of the tank surface. I currently have 1 oto, 1 amano shrimp and 1 golden algae eater as algae control. Will monitor see how. Of course the more correct measure is to know where the root cause.

Thanks Flchamp89 for the algae prevention table. I just bought an ocean free glass cleaner to manually clean off the hair-like algae and it clear up most of the algae. To think I was thinking too much to solve a simple problem. Glass looks clean for now. I still have the 3 algae crew to clean algae off the drift wood with java fern and pebbles.

Good...I try and find the root problem so the issue doesn't return. Im a big fan of inverts though.

No need to say sorry Flchamp89. We understand that this is an international forum and we appreciate knowledge sharing from all over the world. If we are desperate enough for the product, we will do online shopping and shipping.

I always have a mystery snail handy and throw in to clean up. Such algae usually occur for new tank with high light.

Re: How to remove this type of algae?

I think shipping today is now more accessible and affordable worldwide so is too expensive. But we here in Singapore should be able to get most aquarium supplies.

I should have gotten a nerite snail but instead I got two additional over-sized amano shrimp for my nano tank. Impulse buying.

Re: How to remove this type of algae?

More green hair algae has taken over the tank since. Oto and amano shrimp passed on. Now am left with one golden algae eater and two bumblebee horn snails. Managed to get algexit last weekend and dosed according to instructions. Will continue to dose weekly and monitor. One side of the tank is facing the window. Am considering to get black paper or oyama paper to cover that side of the nano tank to shield off the indirect sunlight as it may be the cause of the algae issue.
