Hi I be setting up a new tank dimension of 100*47*50 ...thinking of using substrate and sand with divider. A few questions to ask the gurus here...

    1) how much substrate should I buy if I want fill up 2/3 of tank.
2)what divider do u guys recommend?
    3) the tank comes with overhead filter do u guys advise to change it to canister or is it fine to retain it.
    4 )do I need a uv lamp ?
    5) intend to have livestock of cardinal and cherry shrimps will the cardinal eat up those shrimps?
    6) what is the recommended livestock count ?

    Re: Newbie questions

I be doing some slope with divider likely with drift wood and some stones involved. About 70cm to 80cm of tank with substrate and balance with sand. How thick the substrate normally for such setup ? Base 5cm to slope 10 cm ?

In most cases, ohf for bare tank.

Reason being the downward force of the water might be too strong and the substrate might be disturb. Another is due to the aeration rate is high, which remove the co2 needed by plants

    Re: Newbie questions

    5cm slope to 10cm= average 7.5cm thick.
lets say you want to cover 80% of the footprint(100x47 cm)

    volume of substrate reqd: ( 100x47x7.5x0.8 )/1000 = 28.2 L
you need approximately 3 bags, considering 9L each bag.

    Re: Newbie questions

4: Not really required for FW tanks (at least for a start, too expensive and you can do without them)

    5. cardinals shouldnt eat your tetras they typically cant fit into the mouth (not too sure about frys though but with good amount of hiding spots, the shrimps should be safe)

    6. Starting off with 1 inch of fish per gallon of water will be pretty safe (make sure tank is cycled before adding those fishes though)
