    hi everyone,

have been thinking of getting the new JBJ nanocube at aquarama 2005 but find that the stock lights are quite limiting.

anyone have done any mods to the lighting systems of JBJ nanocubes before?

an excellent site for the nano mods but too bad they don't ship here ... exp too.

I hv a jbj nanocube too.
Are you saying that it is difficult to get the light tube replacement? mine is almost one year. May need to get spare ready.
I hv problem removing the top cover from the hinge.
But i like the concept of the build-in partition filter at the back.
thinking of getting an empty glass tank and DIY a similar type of build-in filter.

i meant adding more light tubes into the hood.

the new 24gallon cube only has 2 x 36W PL lights.
    I'm thinking of modifying it to 3 x 36W or 4 x 36W.
throw in another couple of fans too

maybe i'll just try my hand at DIY

hv to be careful regarding the doubling of heat load. The plastic cover may not be able to take the increased heat.
Though fans may be added but what if they failed unexpectedly.

    thanks for the warning bro
    no worries, safety comes 1st.
pretty confident that the plastic can take the heat

their new 6g model looks cool, with the night LEDs.
Also, noticed now the cooling fans are protected with plastic casing. For the 12g model i got previously, the fans blowing directly to the water at the filter chamber. Now it is used to cool the lights instead.
One thing that frustrate me most is the difficulty in removing the top cover from the tank, esp during a major re-scape. Wonder if the new design offers easier removal? Did not try at the aquarama.

the hood can be easily removed.
just detach the 2 support stands at the side and pull the hood out of the clip-on hinge.
the splash guard is a pain to remove, too many screws.

i am almost finished adding another 2x36w pl into the 24g hood. now looking to add another 2 fans to help in the cooling.
had some space constraints so i removed the stock reflector and threw it away. cut a piece of aluminium stove screen (those screens that u stick with magnet at your stove to prevent oil and stuff from dirtying the wall) and used it as my new reflector.

since it's my 1st time at diy, it looks abit messy at the moment.

    hi all,

finally i got my hands on the 24G DX that was launched at aquarama 2005.
this is my 1st attempt in diy lights so pls forgive the amatuerish look

    ok here's how it looks

    4x36w PL

    all four tubes on

    with the moonlight LEDs on.

stupid thing is that the lights and moonlights are sharing the same power cable and the LEDs will only come on when you off the PL lights.
so if i were to use a light timer, the moonlights will be obsolete.

so i added my own moonlight, 3 LEDs on a small plastic disc between the 1st 2 tubes

have not setup the tank with water yet. will do so in the next couple of weeks. also need to monitor temp levels in case i need to add another couple of fans into the hood.

    cheers
    mel

Mordrake, can a 2ft T5 fit into the available space? PL light are kinda of hot to the touch and you have 4 of them. Did you do the modification yourself? Also am I right that you are going to use your nanocube for a nano marine setup?
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.

i had to remove the original reflector to squeeze in the extra tubes with the eballast external. i would have used t5 if i knew how to wire them
the tank is going to replace my current nano marine.
will probably add another 2 fans. so 2 fans to blow cool air in and other 2 to suck out the hot air.

Any other mod you are thinking of, maybe an IceProbe attachment?

nope. if the fans can't keep temps relatively acceptable, i might set my studyroom aircon to match my light photoperiod
