I have the option of choosing between 2 secondhand eheim canisters.

    1. Eheim 2224 (Pro 1)
    - 3 years old
    - decent condition

    2. Eheim 2026 (Pro 2)
    - 5 years old
    - decent condition

I would be installing lily pipes and this is for my current 20 g long tank. I want to get something lasting that will follow me when I upgrade to a larger tank in future. Which do you think I should get? Thanks!

If im not wrong, by using either of the canister will turn your current tank into washing machine.

    2224 flowrate is 700l/hr?
    2026 flowrate is 950l/hr?

Assuming it includes wear and tear, 15% flowrate reduced. 2224 is fine. But upgrading for next tank, what kind of tank are u looking at?

    Washing machine, really?

Can install double tap valve at filter outlet and adjust flow accordingly.

For 2nd hand stuffs, especially filters, the motor lifespan is always degenerating from constant use. That, you have to take into account.

Next, the rubber gaskets, replace if it's worn out to prevent future leaks.

Personally, either is ok, subject to the 2nd hand price & condition. For your 20gal tank (equival = 75l), rule of thumb is 6x volume, which is abt 450lph. That does not include other stuffs like inline CO2 diffusers or rain bar attached to loop which will reduce flowrate.

Indeed if too much flow, just adjust filter outlet valve until acceptable.

Go for 2026, on paper the flow rate looks big but when you stuffed the filter with media flow reduces considerably. And with lily pipes the flow is more gentle. If you are planning a planted tank, it is good enough for this 20g tank only.

If you have a plan to upgrade your tank, you can compliment this filter with a cheap circulation pump or even an internal filter to avoid dead spots.

My suggestion, go for the filter with high flow rate, we can find many ways to reduce the flow to desired level but not the other way round.

    I used pro3 2073(1050lph) on my 2ft tank earlier.
With full media and full length spray bar I achieved good results.

Thanks for all your input shifus. They were critical in helping me make my decision. I shall go for the 2026 along with lily pipes. If the flow really turn my tank into a washing machine I install a double tap valve at the outlet to decrease flow. Thanks again everyone!
