Hi everyone!

Sorry for the massive delay I have been busy throughout the school term but now I've time to post my long overdue follow-up on my King Of DIY Style Overflow system which I sought help from the AQ Community and eventually solved the issue.

So I started my 20l bedroom aquarium ages ago but HOB filters kept letting me down due to their small capacity and hassle when it comes to maintenance. I decided to build a DIY trickle filter out of a set of plastic drawers purchased from Toyogo and hence had to device a overflow system capable of handling the flow rate.

This was the first Overflow design I came up with:

So the issue with this was that the tube that sticks into the water through the wier was too high up. Due to the fact that the entire system runs on the principle of water pressure, this caused water to trickle out at a disgustingly slow rate.

Here is the schemetic diagram:

The blue line represents the water level. The INPUT TUBE is the tube that will stick into the wier and come into contact with the water.
The Green Arrow represents the distance the water will have to "Travel" in order to "Overflow" down the pipe and into the filter.
As you can see the INPUT TUBE was not placed very deep into the wier, as there was approximately 5-6cm between it and the bottom of the Wier. This caused the pressure acting on the water in the INPUT TUBE to be low and hence causing water to flow out at a slow rate.
Also, the distance that water "travelled" (Green Arrow) was approximately 3-4cm which is not ideal as water should only need to travel a bit in order to overflow, in order to yield the highest rate of flow.

Here is my new design (together with the entire setup):

For the new build I made sure the INPUT TUBE went all the way down (merely 1cm from the bottom). Also the distance travelled is only 1cm as well.

The filter unit:

The filter unit was made out of a chest of plastic drawers from Toyogo and this allows me to stuff a heck lot of media into the filter (Black Malta at the top, Ceramic Rings in the middle and White Filter Wool at the bottom)

Co2 Reactor:

One of the main reasons for this build was that the pump system will enable me to install a external reactor that is proven to be twice as effecitve as regular ceramic diffusers and bubble ladders.

Thank you all for taking the time to read through my lengthy post! Will post updates if neccesary!

Cheers,
