    Re: Barb community tank

Having kept Platys and Barbs, I find that Platys are less hardy than Barbs, as they fall sick easily when constantly stressed. Since Barb's are more 'boisterouss' and speedy, they tend to dominate the tank. Thus, I would try not to put too many of them together with Platys, But mixed Barb's should be no problem.

Generally speaking, it is better to understock a tank than overstocking it, for reasons of easier maintenance. Having too many fish in a tank will also deprive them of 'quality of life' in the restrictive environment of the tank. But if you are able to spend a lot of time on tank maintenance, then there should be no problem. I'd say stick to 6 or 7 of each type of Barb may be good for a 4ft.
