    Hi all! I'm shawnlyq, and is pretty much new to aqua-projects!

    It's been almost a month of planning and I'm trying to cut as much cost as possible while going around looking for freebies to start on the project. (Just maybe cause I don't really have that high of a spending power).

    I've read many threads that were pretty useful and now hope I could be part of the community. Really looking forward to seeing more aqua-projects in this forum!

    And just a short blurb on my progression;

    So far I've gotten:
    - 3 x (42" * 15" * 15") Tank;
    - 3 tier stand;
    - cycled water from LFS;
    - 16L of H.E.L.P advanced soil;
    - Growth lights;

    However with GEX Best Bio Sand articles floating around shaking my decision on substrate, I would probably try to switch substrate before beginning the entire project. Anybody has their take on this?

    P.S. I wonder if anybody here does aquaponics as well so I could get personal experience from seniors here!

    Hi,

    I saw your thread and joined so I could respond.

    I started an Aquaponics project in June 2016 by ordering 50 Blue Nile tilapia fingerlings online. For the summer I let them grow out in my garden pond where I'd previously added a few feeder goldfish each summer. Since it freezes solid each winter, I had to learn about and design my 1st system in time to get my juveniles in for the winter. I moved in 49 on Oct 15th and grew them out through the winter. This June, I moved 7 back outside to breed in the pond. They produced 105 fry and there are about 30 surviving fingerlings to take in this winter.

    I found this site as I'm wanting to build a "pretty" and much more natural system than the typical AQ System. I'm not raising the fish for money, just to eat as I can't bring myself to eat any farmed tilapia.

    I will try to attach some pics in a member intro thread.

    For Aquaponics specific information your might want to try the Backyard Aquaponics forum.
