Hi, anyone have used the stainless steel pipes before? How's the experience like compared to glass lily pipes? Glass lily pipes are great looking but after covered with algae may not..

Re: Stainless steel pipes in place of glass lily pipes

I also wanted to use the stainless steel pipes for my input and output because i love the look of the metal but decided to stick to clear glass and acrylic for two main concerns,

    1) I wont be able to see through the pipe with stainless steel, that means if there is anything growing in the pipes or if it gets clogged, I won't be able to notice it immediately.

    2) stainless steel will rust eventually. Though it takes longer than normal iron, once the coating wears off, stainless steel will also rust.

Hope maybe someone here have experience using them for a long period of time though can advise!

Hi thanks for the reply, i thought it was made of i think 316 grade steel, so it should not rust. But I'm not sure.

Should be ok if you get actual stainless steel and not galvanised or plated steel pipe. Don't forget there are stainless steel canister filters on the market.

Hmmm... If the reason is that there glass don't look so nice once it's covered in algae, it's going to be the same regardless the material. Steel will still get covered with algae.

Currently I do not have the experience of using stainless steel pipes, but I’m gonna assume that some algae eating fish or shrimps can helps to clean the exterior a little. The problem with glass is the interior that there’s no way to clean it besides taking out completely. But of course for the steel pipes, I’m juz hiding the problem away, cos internally it might be choking already. Anyways, was juz wondering if there’s any real advantages of using steel instead of plastic or glass.

Didn't think about the stuff inside being visible. In that respect, since it's opaque, there should be less/slower build up as there is no light to grow algae inside. Plus, out of sight, out of mind.

I'm using PVC pipes for my planted tank (sump). Most of that plumbing is impossible to clean. Those that I can, when I do, has significantly less build up then the green translucent pipes and hoses of canister filters.

    Hope that helps some.
