    Code:
    | <--overflow |
    | | |
    | | |
    | | |
    | | |
    | | |
    | | |
    +---+------------------------+

    | | |
    | |^| |
    | |^| |
    | |^| |
    | |^| |
    | |^| |
    | | <-- underflow |
    +---+------------------------+

    ^ indicates water flow.
Some tanks combine both, but I can't remember how it's set up.

Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

The water for both are pumped back to the tank the same way.

The underflow is just an overflow with one more piece of glass outside the IOS. The water has to enter from the bottom, travel up between the two pieces of glass and then overflow into the sump from the top. (I'll edit the graphics to show the water flow.)

Underflow IOS/EOS are usually designed not to have a substrate. But it can be overcomed by sectioning of the portion in front of the underflow opening and prevent substrate from filling that area.

Bro do you have a diagram on how the section is setup to prevent sand from going into underflow?

    No need diagram.

The bottom of the underflow just needs to be high enough so that sand don't be get sucked up.

Example, if you plan go have 1 inch of substrate, then the under flow should start 1 inch above the substrate.

What is the recommended substrate thickness to avoid "dead zone" ?

I am thinking 1 to 1.5cm thickness using fine sand.

This would be a cichlid tank.

    Thanks Vin!

    Re: IOS overflow and underflow.

I do planted tanks, so I'm used to deep substrates aerated by plant roots.

Not sure about unplanted substrates. Sorry can't help there.
