Nice rocks. Perhaps a Java moss carpet?

Is it like those grown on wire mesh?

Yes, or free floating ones will do as well. Just press them down on the substrate.

I just noticed that the substrate level is very low like 1cm? How do you plant those stem plants?

I just tied the stems together with thread and bury them in. Will be getting a soil substrate soon

    Re: Newbie 1ft Tank

May be no need buy soil. The Limnophila Sessi on the left may grow large for your tank, the Rotala Wallichii isn't exactly a beginner plant and you need to dose, have good lights with rich substrate, CO2 etc for it to do really well.

Just get some cheap small java fern, java moss and tie them to the rocks that you have in the tank and let it be. Less worry?
