Hi time to bother you 🙂
As you aware those light bulbs fr ikea they only display in lumens format. For 6500k is actually how much lumens? Couldn’t find any kelvin lumen converter online.

Re: Need help on lumen to kelvin

    Hi there,

The "k/kelvin" is actually the colour temperature of the light bulb, ranging from yellow, white to blue.

Lumens is the brightness output of the bulb.

There is no correlation from colour temperature to brightness output.

The only converter you can find for lumens is from wattage.

    Hope this clarifies!

    +1 to what vipered said.

To make things clearer, "temperature" refers to the "colour" of light emitted by a theoretical black object when it is at various (very high!) temperatures (measured in Kelvins, K).

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black-body_radiation

So the temperature rating on lightbulbs gives you an idea of what wavelengths will be dominant, e.g. the reds are more obvious at lower "temperatures", blues more obvious at higher "temperatures", etc.

Thank you Vipered and boofeng appreciate the wiki info.
As I know for a planted tank it is necessary to raise the temp 6500k, since I'm using bulbs(Ikea) they only label in lumen so I'm quite puzzled exactly how many lumens should I get.

Re: Need help on lumen to kelvin

Most welcome. Actually I don't do the typical planted tanks myself - I grow plants only to the extent they help me keep fish (keep water clean, provide shelter, etc).

    But about lumens...

    1. Many planted tank people measure PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) instead of lumens, but you can use lumens as a starting point (more lumens generally means more PAR). PAR is measured not at the bulb, but at various areas of the tank, e.g. at the surface, or at the substrate, etc to know how much light is available at different areas of the tank.

    2. You will need (or rather, you can choose to have) more light output if you have

    a. more plants

    b. deeper water (light energy is lost very fast with distance, plants far from the light e.g. carpet plants actually get a lot less light than plants near the light e.g. floating plants)

    c. if you are using CO2 and you fertilize accurately

    3. You can also vary how long you're switching on the light to control how much light your tank receives. So a low-output light switched on for a long time can give you similar outcomes as a high-output light switched on for a shorter time (not 100% identical, but roughly there).

Many planted tank people talk about light as a speed setting - if you have more light, you can grow plants faster, succeed faster, but you also run into problems faster. Maybe start with less light? It will make life easier - you'll have more time to identify problems and resolve them before things start falling apart.

No one is an expert, but the problem is some newbies think they are better than most veterans here. They are like 3 months into this hobby only, doesn't do competitions, doesn't do sponsorships, no contributions till date, but they just enjoy arguing with people here and on facebook (with their white knights), even when they know squat. They think they travel to Japan and post photos of aquascape tanks makes them "atas".

They may label it as warm white or cool white, 6500K is warm white
