Which substrate is best for ammonia fixation

Hi all! I'm currently using a sand substrate and my plants aren't doing that well. I dose pure ammonia once a week and I was wondering if there is any substrate that binds to it and allows for slow release over the week?

Dosing ammonia is quite a sure way to get deaths and plants melting.U need active substrate but even then it will eventually be depleted.
