Increase your light intensity
Hi guys, I'm new to this hobby and started with some "monte carlo", which I noticed is growing vertically. Is this normal or did I buy a different kind of plant? Picture below. Appreciate the advice - Thanks all!

Increase your light intensity
It is OK to see your MC grow vertically at the initial period. Once it grow out, the stem will be longer and roots will be develop from there and they starts crawling and roots spreading.
Having said that, stronger light would probably helps to fasten up the process.

No, don't increase light intensity. Increase CO2 injection.
If carpet plant grows vertically, most often CO2 intake is at borderline.
Most light fixture have fix intensity unless those with controllers. Mine does, I diy my own. Tested b4 with PAR meter and most of the time vertical growth is due to lack of CO2.
Also increasing light can cause algae outbreak as excess nutrients the plants can't use, algae will take advantage.
Provide unlimited CO2 excess for plants as long as your fishes don't get affected. Bubbles per second count is a baseline. Monitoring the growth of plants and fishes is the best gauge how much to inject.
Monte carlo is an easy carpet plant. After getting use to the environment, it can grow very fast and not so demanding. Having said that, the initial period, this plant can get some environment shock (temperature, CO2...etc.). And yes, increase CO2 is a safer way to make it get use to the environment. Your lighting should be as mentioned, should be OK. All the best!
