Hi I'm new at setting up a planted tank and have a question on choosing an appropriate substrate.

I intend to introduce just some simple plants (java fern, Anubis) and mosses for a start for a low tech planted aquarium and later adding in some red cherry shrimps. In this case, do I need a nutrient rich substrate (the plants are generally not root feeders?) Any thoughts on using GEX black pure soil?

    TIA!

As you have correctly identified, your choice of plants are not root feeders. Even if you do not have any substrate, the setup will be fine. However, most will consider a layer of decorative options that are easy to maintain, such as lapis sand, etc, etc. Just stir it a bit during your weekly water change and the debris will be sucked out with your outflow.
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

I use ANS Shrimp Soil (pink packaging) for my neocaridina tank. OK so far. No yellowing or die-off of anubias, java fern and mosses.
