as long as the output voltage is 9-12v dc, you should be fine. 500ma is more than enough to run a single fan. the amount of current required depends on the fan. i have seen fans that require 350ma but these are high speed and noisy. a lot of 12v fans are rated 120ma.

check the fan. chances are these rating are stated on some labels.

you should not have a problem in running 2 fans. for the first few hours of operation, check the temperature on the adaptor periodically to ensure that it doesn't overheat. overheat - hot to touch, maybe max 3 second before you have to remove your hands.
do check the adaptor for ul, ce or vde markings. if such markings are printed on the adaptor then the adaptor will not catch fire.

Give at least a 25% safety margin when calculating the current for the fans.
    Will give u ( and us ) a good night's sleep then...

Re: AC DC adaptor for DIY fan

While We're on this topic, a guy here used the Nokia charger to power the fan. Can this really be done? Cos' I thought that the charger's output is AC while the fans are DC.

    Cheers

nope. i don't think so. usually, a mobile phone charger will not be ac due to safety concerns.
    it usually has dc output.

Rigged up one yesterday. Yes, Nokia charger is DC. However, fan spins slower, just like what most guys here experienced.

    Cheers

    Yo KWL,
Depends strongly on what Fan the person gets.
But 12V fans are pretty common. Don't you think so too
