I've a Ikea lamp, it's original bulb is rated at 20W, 12V. Can I use a 12V 50W bulb in this lamp? Only that the bulb will not be at it's maximum brightness right?

replacing 12v, 20w with 12v, 50w bulb means brighter lights. make sure that the light fixture can handle the extra heat generated and the extra power requirement can be handled.

It's halogen, and I don't think I'd want to rish heat issues with halogen bulbs

The thing is, it's the fixture that decides what current to draw, not the bulb isn't it? In that case, if I fix a 50W bulb to a rated 20W max fixture, the fixture will just go to 20W, and leave it as it is? The bulb will not force additional current right?

Higher wattage bulbs will cause more current to run through.

I think it might be either the the load limit of the transformer or the heat capacity of the housing that limits the wattage of bulbs to be used.
