Rot fish will have strong, fishy, foul meaty smell. Rotin plant dun smell so bad, unless they are tucked in some oxygenless corner, where they will putrify into something green-grey that looks and smells like the swamp thing.

Another source of stink is blue-green algae, very hard to get rid if you stick your hand into it, and it will permeate into the house. yukieyuk.

Ammonia smells bad too. In science lab, we used to force class suckers to take a hard sniff from the beaker.

I think healthy aquariums should smell good too (an earthy, 'alive' sort of smell). Many bare tanks (by those people who think having plants and gravel etc is too "dirty" and messy) stink like s***, all the unconverted ammonia in the water. Turtle tanks, especially.

When I was young and too curious for my own good, a stinkbug got me. I stank like a rotten egg for weeks! Some sticky slime that water dun wash off.

If I have a garden, i will grow Amorphallus titanum! It's a member of the same family as crypts and anubias, and develops a 1.5 m tall flower that looks and smells like a piece of dead elephant.
Something to drive the neighrbours away. Please let me know if you have any. huhuh

Another stinky relative of the cryptocoryne is Montrichardia, an aquatic aroid found in South America. It's eaten by a bird called the hoatzin, so the bird is also called Stinkbird! I wan one too!

it's obvious i am very very bored. ###@@@***

if the whole tank smells like that
your problem is rotting stuff in your filter
    clean the filter
your fish will thank you for it

Does it smell like rotten eggs? Could be your substrate turned anaerobic and is producing hydrogen sulphide.
