    Hi Arorules,

A fliter is a necessity if you intend for the ammonia produced by your fish to be converted to nitrite and then to nitrate that the plants can use.

Without a filter, the above process is almost impossible. A filter will also help you remove any water born particles that will clog up more delicate plants.

Also, If you are dosing CO2, using a bubble (air pump) will only be counter efficient cos, the air pump aerates the water thus causing you to lose CO2 via surface agitation.

Although I am sure a low mantenance 3 ft is possible with no filter and airpump, you have to be extra careful with managing your CO2 dosing ,water chemistry and bioload

Well, you can either get a external canister type filter or an internal filter. If you really have to use the overhang, might wanna check out other threads or do a search for overhang filter. I think I remember some forum poeple tried it before.

However, I would not recommend overhang filter for efficient CO2 dissolve rate as the water being pumped up and passed over the top filter will cause much CO2 loss.

Your best bet: A cannistor filter. Ehiem is a good investment, but Atman/Jebao/Jebo are good substitues. Try not to use Overhead filters, hang-on filters, and air pump driven filters.

A cannistor filter will allow you good flowrate and distribution of water, as well as a way to connect a external reactor to for C02.

    it's possible.......
but u gotta be careful of algae, cos sometimes sunlight may shine on ur tank.....
then u gotta start asking how to counter ALGAe,
and i guess outdoor temp higher, should be la.......
ur tank temp will prob exceed 30 degree, not very good for mosses growth

I think the problem you really face with java moss if you leave ur tank outdoor is the high temp. Most moss require cooler temp to grow well. Not sure whether do you have a smaller tank to try out first. Monitor the temp and c how. If it is alway at above 30, not that adviseable.

Do remember to let your water cycle first before adding any shrimps, else they would not survive as happened to mine when I first started. Now my 20 cherries are doing fine and having eggs too. Too bad have not seen any shrimplets, probably ended up as food to my fishes in the tank.

Shrimps also prefer cooler temperature if I am not wrong. Another reason to get the fan!
    Cheers,
    Joe

Yup... that what's happening to my tank. Saw my cherries with eggs for the second time but no shrimplets. Setting up a second tank to move the cherries over.
    Cheers,
