It is an algae. I've never gotten it in a planted tank, but in my Tanganyikan tank I got when with a combination of sunlight and poor water quality.

I have that when I didn't used any filter in my low-maintenance tank. Got one running recently and it slowly disappear. Stagnant water could be the cause.

Maybe can try to increase the flowrate of the water or adjust the outlet towards the affected area.

Too much nutrients do not cause algae directly.

I referred to it as poor water quality meaning there's a high level of ammonia/nitrites, or high levels of organic waste like fish poo, uneaten food etc. The filter might not be performing well. Take note that that's a Tanganyikan tank, not a planted tank. However, it could be similar.

The reason you can't get a name for it is probably because it has numerous names: cotton wool algae, hair algae, fuzz algae, whatever. This kind of algae brings to mind poor water qualities/ and also poor water circulation AkionLCG has mentioned.

As usual, Yamatos should munch on it.

    Here's what I'd do:

    1) Turn off the filter.
    2) Remove as much of the algae as you can.
    3) 50% water change.
    4) Refill the tank.
    5) Make sure C02/nutrients are good if it's a "high tech" tank.

Check everything, C02, filter, whether something has been forgotten to be done, something rotting in the tank, the plants overgrowing, no water circulation, too much fish, overfeeding, blah blah.

Battling algae has pretty much a standard way of doing it.

BTW, limpeh not your bro. call me Terence or didi can already.

Thx for the advice..had done wat u mentioned..no fish thus ammonia will not be an issure(tested lah), new tank lah...very fed up, its always the initial setting up that causes to much prob...

Btw 'Bro' is ntg but an universal term to address one like a fellow forumer (or rather an unspoken but comprehended way) 'politely'.

And I don think u have sufficient accumulation of years to be wa lao pei

(Don mind but limpei is quite an distasteful word to me)

Ah a new tank. This algae is common then. It should go away after the tank has matured.

I remember bro being a universal term for another forum only . No offense meant on the "limpeh" part.

Well, you don't need to have nor will get algae if you start things off properly. Plant mass, mulm addition, good amount of nutrients and most important of all CO2 if you use it. If you get algae, you are not doing something right yet.

First of all, it will be better for you to give us more information in order to help you better. Those algae seems to be diatoms...you should be able to kill it off by doing a 2-4 day blackout.

Forgot to add on, I dosed some hydrogen peroxide a day into my 1ft tank before and do a water change (including sucking away the algae) as much as possible. Fix a cannister filter and run for a few days before adding some fishes. Have 2 casualties out of 12 killifish and maybe 2 casualties out of 5 otos a week later (can't see the other 2 so presume MIA). Btw, my tank temp is 31degC. Maybe the temp could be partially resposible for the deaths...

Use a hair comb, it'll remove it from the hair grass, brush your hair (grass)often!

    Shrimps will eat this species.
Blackout also will beat it back, but not kill it off.
Simply combing and shrimp are enough.

Be gentle, use the larger teeth, then after, use the finer teeth to remove the rest.

Hair grass can be cut just like hair also, never pull it up.
    It'll grow back quick.
