I'm thinking of getting hairgrass ( the long variety ) and getting them to be half emersed, roots in water and tips of the leaves sticking out.

    Is this workable?

Also, the hairgrass sold in shops nowadays always seem to stay short. Does extensive trimming make them grow tall? Or do you have to get the tall ones in the first place, because I have some tall ones that were gotten as contaminant plants and they're like skyscrapers in my tank as compared to the ones I got from my LFS.

    Thanks!

Workable. In fact, that's the natural way for it to grow.

not only HG, thats the way to grow for almost 99% of so called aquatic plants in the hobby. Only a handful are true aquatic.

I saw some long ones a few days ago at Sea View Aquarium (not many bunches though). The one at Seletar West Farmway.

It's correct. And you might like to start a new thread for this kind of questions. Doing what you've done can be viewed as "thread hijacking", or you can do a search just in case your question has been asked before.
