NKF's administration brought to public scrutiny in case against SPH
By S Ramesh, Channel NewsAsia
SINGAPORE : The National Kidney Foundation's (NKF) defamation suit against the Singapore Press Holdings has opened in the High Court.
The case centres around an article in the Straits Times published on 19 April 2004 entitled "The NKF Controversially ahead of its time".
And first to take the stand was the NKF's CEO, TT Durai who made some startling revelations during cross examination by SPH's Senior Counsel Davinder Singh.
The article in question was written by SPH's journalist Susan Long, whom NKF is also suing.
It had an account of a contractor who had been hired to install some bathroom fittings for its new headquarters in 1995.
NKF says the article had many falsehoods and half truths. But Monday's hearing was more than just about toilet fittings.
It was a public scrutiny of how the NKF is administered and run, the travel patterns of its senior executives and the chief executive officer, and what salaries were paid to the CEO in the last three years.
The court heard that CEO Durai got a twelve month bonus last year. And between 2002 and 2004, he would have earned close to S$1.8 million.
From the outset, Senior Counsel Davinder Singh who is acting for SPH, emphasized the importance of transparency and public accountability on NKF's part as every cent which NKF spent came from public donations.
Several senior officials from NKF were in court to follow the proceedings, including its patron Mrs Goh Chok Tong.

I also have the same feeling (just feeling, in case someone decides to sue me for my input here) long time back. But other than NKF, which organisation can we donate to kidney patients? I want to donate but hate to know (from papers today) that quite a substantial chunk goes to salaries/bonus.Originally Posted by curahee
Isn't it a practise in commercial world?
If the CEO charts the right direction and meet or exceed their target profit, he is rewarded more handsomely.
However, since this is a charitable organisation, perhaps no need to give up to 12 months bonus? Sounds a lot to me too since many people already have trouble finding jobs.

Since when is NKF a commercial-entity? At least not that I know of.Originally Posted by juggler
I thought it is a charitable organisation? No? Maybe I am donating to the wrong organisation all these while.

should go and take a look at NKF building at Wampoa drive ... some nice car from the employee ler.... what can I comment
My friend's also keep complaining about NKF service....below is the message ...
This is precisely the point why I DO NOT support them even though my mom is under their subsidy. I used to work there during school holidays as FA artist. I saw their luxury office and totally changed my mind about them.
Even though my mom is under their subsidy, they make the kdiney patients to go thru blood test all the time (say twice a week). Each test cost abt $100 over. Reason for the test is to see if patients have HIV. It's fair to have blood test BUT if my mom has done it in a hospital a few days ago and the doctor gave us the blood test results to be handed over to NKF for record. The test is still valid for submission. One of the nurse insisted my mom go thru the test again for no valid reason but just to make money out of the patients whom they claim to hugely helped in their battle in their daily life. SO NOT TRUE!! If their patiems are so poor, how are they supposed to pay for their REGULAR blood test (which I don't find the need to do so frequently).
Apart from earning money from the blood test, they sent the next of kin of the patients a donation collection card for them to go around begging for NKF! It's somekind of a blackmail tactic as my mom is under their dialysis centre. I ask them how they got my contact when they call me for help. I told them I'm supporting my mom but they literally forced it down my mailbox and insisted that I can do my best to help them since I've been supporting them (NOT TRUE..I have never supported them in any way before. They found my number from my mom's database and hound for any contacts they can find to help support their expensive lifestyle corporation).
The point is they are using public sympathy with their sad ads about these kidney patients and now they have cancer patients unit for their own gain.
They been to my office before but I not a keen supporter of NKF... perhaps some kind of Government audit is needed to keep these things in-check.

What is 'Direct Charitable Expenses'?
Is it money use for (example) fund-raising-programs?
Or is it money use to give to do the intended charitable work?
I rekon that is the money used for charitable work.Originally Posted by Nicky

Never supported them anyways...it only figures..
One thing I would like to highlight is that the reporting might be different for each organisation.Originally Posted by bclee
As far as I know, KDF outsource its services while NKF may hire direct headcount to do the job. If this is the case, the cost of outsourcing may be reported under "direct charitable expenses" while for NKF the cost will fall under employee costs. (I am no accountant, just hypthesising.)
All I want to say is that the figures can be reported and interpreted in many ways... don't get over excited about it...
