Tired of seeing the worms crawling around...Just devised a contraption to get rid of the above.

    Materials:
    Small plastic bowl with cover
    Small stone.
    Fishing line
    Bait (anything chunky)
A sharp screw driver (to heat up and burn the holes)

    1. Take a small plastic container.
    2. Heat and punch or drill some tiny holes (big enough for the planaria to crawl through)
    3. Put a small stone inside the container as a weight.
    4. Tie a fishing line for easy retrieval.
    5. Insert some sort of bait. (I used frozen blood worms)
    5. Put in the tank, wait...1-2 hours.
    6. Take out the catch ...and pour boiling water to kill them.

Pretty effective...hmmm, maybe should patent this

One thing to note, when you are retreiving the plastic bowl out, use another one to cup it else the planaria will flow out of the trap together with the water gushing out.

Think u are right on the taste. fish dun fancy these worms. i read abit about these worms and found a discussion thread and the fishes that eat the worms.

So Far fish that do eat planaria:
    Killis (probable)
Ciclids (angel fish do eat planaria)
    Fat heads
    damnbusia, (gambusia)
    orangethroat darters,
    redbelly dace,
    sand shiner
    central stoneroller
I have no idea what fishes are they talking about except for some.

    This is the site :
    http://fins.actwin.com/nanf/month.200202/msg00078.html

Maybe for u would be best for u to use ur method since it is a shrimp tank and fishes might harm ur shrimps. Planaria worms are harmless as explained in various sites but the fact that they appear means to much of leftovers, dead fish....

    More on the worms here:

Make a trap like this with dead fish or raw liver inside and place on the gravel, it works well.

I used this chemical called vermex to clear planaria. Very effective just used once and I don't see them the next day.
Got it from Nature Aquarium. See below thread.

opps, I think I have missed this post. This "design" actually belongs to a friend, I dont take credit for that.

You use a 250ml mineral water bottle, cut into 1/3 (mouth part) and 2/3. Join the 2 parts up in that manner.
There should not has gap in-between the 2 parts, so planeria will crawl in from the mouth of the bottle and get to the bottle where the bait is.

And when u remove the bottle, planeria will stay inside the bottle.

Is there any medicine that kill planarias but saved for shrimp? Planarias in my shrimp tank is very-very small, look a like a dot/oval moving on the glass. I have been removing it manually and after a while get sick of it. I want to remove it once and for all.

I saw the article at Shrimpnow.com about using Dewormer containing fluebendazole and Dimilin containing Diflubenzuron. Anybody try this before? What is the dosage? Can I get it from pharmacies?

I've tried bomb my aquarium using H2O2 or bleach (DO NOT USE IT IN YOUR AQUASCAPE).......
They gone for about 2 weeks and there again.... Almost all my plant died....

The final way use the Tiger Barb Fish(In Indonesia we call it ikan sumatera). Do not feed them. It will force them to eat the planaria... But careful. This fish really a fin niper and if you have shimp in your Aquascape trust me it will be an expensive food for them.....

*** Copied from slugs in tank by Vinz ***

With bait You will never get all planaria out of the tank.

You can try garlic. Press one clove of garlic per ten litres in the tank, put it in a permeable bag and let it in there for some hours. Hang the bag in front of the outlet of Your filter so the garlic essence is in the flow. Normally the shrimp don't care the garlic (even like it) – watch them carefully. If they behave unnormal put out the garlic and make a water change. More O2 in the water may help either.

You can catch one planaria and test it with garlic – not all species of planaria seem to react on garlic.

Another method is to salt up Your tank. Many dwarf shrimps are more or less salt tolerant. Red cherrys tolerate upt to 25 grams per litre (but that much isn't necessary to kill the planaria). CRS also tolerate at least a few grams per litre. Again: Catch one planaria (with a pipette) and test it with brackish water, let's say with a dilution of 5 grams per litre. If it dies (You can watch the effect immediatly, it writhes and squirms and becomes still) You can try the procedue in Your tank.

Important: If You salt up Your tank do it in small steps. Don't change freshwater against 10 gr/L in one step! Salt it up in steps of two or three gr/L to give all shrimp the time to adapt.

Both methods should be tested before usage in the tank. There are many many species of planaria and not all react intolerant to salt or garlic.

Re: How to get rid of planaria (flat worms)

My method is manually removed. I track the planaria movement, once it crawled to the tank side wall, I will sqeeze the planaria against the side wall and crushed it. No chemical involved.

    Hi magpie,

great method. With squeezing the planaria You make thousands of new planaria since out of EVERY SINGLE CELL comes out one new planaria!
