They should be very vibrant in colour (both blue and red parts) and the body should be a little fat and not skinny. They should be very active and not lethargic.
Don't know if my conclusion is correct but I think healthy and good cardinal tetras have red undersides. I have seen some with silver bellies but I think they are not healthy or neon tetras posing as cardinals to sell at a higher price.
Any pros can guide on how to tell good cardinals?

Just like stormhawk has said, also I tend to look for any signs of damage on the body.
Those cardinals in the shop are usually poor buggers, they're usually discoloured. Buy the nice ones you find, and in your tank after a few days they should be properly coloured.
Just went to Rainbow in Serangoon North. Costs double of the other LFS I saw with discoloured Cardinals. They look very healthy and shiny but I dunno if it's worth the money. $2 per bugger. Wanna get 50 of these buggers. $100
Make sure that they are not too skinny, are active and no sign of sicknesses eg damage fins or white spot..due to the colour wise, when cardinal has adapted the new environment, their color will be very beautiful (full blue n red)..
Reasons for fading colour are either new environment or stress.
$2 per cardinal??? We are not staying in US or UK... Try C328... I bought 100 pieces for much less than that!Originally Posted by comebashme

I'm crypt collecting... Starting cheap, now have Cryptocoryne beckettii, C.beckettii var petchii, C.crispatula var.balansae, C.griffithii(Melted! ), C.nurii, C.parva, C.pygmaea(Melted! ), C.tonkinensis(Melted! ), C.walkeri, C.wendtii 'Brown', C.wendtii 'Green', C.wendtii 'Green Gecko', C.wendtii 'Tropica' and Cryptocoryne x willisii
Oh, juggling is hard work, man!...
$2 is a tad bit expensive but if you want things cheap you have to order in bulk to save. Try places like C328 or Y618, where I think they do take bulk orders.
We certainly don't live in the UK or US, but hey, if you want quality, you can't baulk at the prices. If the fish's quality is worth every penny, then even $2 per cardinal isn't that expensive.

Try going to Gan's Fish Farm if you drive. Or Seaview aquarium at Jalan Kayu.

Alot of cardinals look crappy in the shops especially when new and small. Bought 50 yesterday from NA and this morning after a night in my planted tank here in Singapore, they looked much, much better.
I wish I could bring them back to Perth with me, they are A$5.50 each there!!!!
Gosh... A$5.50/pc? 10pcs = $55...100pcs =.......Originally Posted by Alfred
You can say that again, I just bouht a new 5x2x2 and will set it up in Oct. I was hoping to put 500 cardinals in there, but will have to re think that due to cost!Originally Posted by hirowen
LOL I think you can just set up a shop just selling these buggers there. Or u can mass produce them here n export it thereOriginally Posted by Alfred
Anyone breeding cardinals here?
Not that I've heard of.. so no, not yet.
It isn't very easy to spawn, unlike its cousin the neon tetra and the fry are just as tiny at birth as the neon fry.

I second you Alfred. I was quoted - 50 cardinals @ AU$4.20 each.
Anyone have any success in breeding them? Can make pretty good money here.
If you are not aware yet, the farms in Czech Republic have already successfully bred the cardinals. Some of the cardinals on sale in LFS around the world could very well be farm bred now.
