yah, get a drill and use metal wires to tie the tubes onto the hood too. don't want them falling into the water and electrocuting people.

you need to replace the ballast. Get electronic ones as they are not as hot (although may not be a problem in Scotland). How much wattage can you managed anyway? The more the merrier as far as lights are concerned, around 100W would be good.

well, i have 4 ballasts, 1 is unknown capacity (has 18w in it just now), 2 20w max, and 1 30w max as far as i know. i use flourescents lghts, and keep the balasts as far away from my tank as i can. because of my budget i cant upgrade any of these easily, unless i find a very cheap one.

try epoxy. those in plasticine form where you need to knead 2 parts into 1. water and heat resistent.

drilling is not easy sometimes. i remember breaking a drill bit just to drill through a thin sheet of stainless steel. so it depends on the material. also, sometimes, precision can be out too if you are not good with power drill. i had a hard time drilling just 2 exact holes into a metal sheet for the C-clip to hold my PL tube.

    c_a_hale,

The starters can actually be used for wattages between 4~40W. So no problem.....
    Cheers!!
