    Bros,

I am newbie to planted tank and have already read up some postings prior to writing this 'virgin' thread.

I intend to grow moss, ferns, stemed plants with fishes and MANY cherry shrimps.
My current tank size is 2ft x 1ft x 1.5ft and I will be getting a CO2 system but NO chiller.

    Pls enlighten me the following.

    1) What's your recommendation on the lightings in terms of watts.
    2) Do I have to buy canister filter? Pls propose the model.
    3) What's your recommendation on the fertiliser and gravel and how much to buy.
    4) What should be the correct depth of the gravel since my tank is 1.5ft in height.
    5) Will the cherry shrimps survive if the temp. is too high due to the max. lighting in order to enhance the plants photosynthesis process. What should be the correct temp.
    6) How to achieve plant photosynthesis process as I can see in some LFS having plants emitting small bubbles without endangering the lives of the shrimps due to higher CO2.
    7) What should be the correct bubble per second for my CO2 system.
Is DIY fans better than those selling in LFS. How many to put?

Hope you can help me out with the questions before I embark to this "adventure".

    Thank you in advance

    Welcome!

It's all really up to you, but here's my say:

    1) 36W PL lighting should be sufficient.

    2) You can have a internal filter, but cannistors are better imho. Ehiem? I use a Atman 3335 for my 2ft.

    3) Get Lapis sand, base fert use JBL Aquabasis Plus.

    4) Get around 10cm of gravel, sloping down from back to the front.

    5) There's no correct temp. Keep it under 28 degrees preferably, maximum 30 degrees.

    6) Those bubbles are oxygen. The plants bubble when conditions are good for them and the water is saturated with gases. Plants photosynthesize readily once you provide the conditions necessary.

    7) There's no correct bps count. Read up: http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_plant_co2chart.htm

8 ) Imho, they're better. I have 2 fans for my 2ft. Most have two or one.

P.S. vinz, you ought to change the code for the smiley.

    Hi bro,

    Thanks for your quick reply.
I am just wondering if 36W lighting will do the job of getting the plants photosynthesize since the ht of my tank is 1.5ft. Pls adv.
Also, will the cherry shrimps survive if the CO2 is high in order to get the photosynthesis process??

    Hi Cruiser,

Welcome to the hobby. If you are doing a low maintainance setup. a 1 x 36W lighting is sufficient for your setup.

CO2 shouldn't be too high unless you want fresh tempura / sashimi

    Hahaha....thanks for reply.
In that case what should be the correct CO2 level to gauge that the shrimps are comfortable with and how many to put. Based on 36W lighting, do you think the plants will let out oxygen...whereby I can see the tiny bubbles?
What plants are easier to release the bubbles??

Yes you can get the pearling/bubbling effect with 36W, provided that your CO2 is 30-40ppm, your fertilisers are in order, and your plants are in good health. Your shrimps will be fine in the above CO2 range.

Riccia is the best producer of the bubbling effect.
