why is it that shrimps couldn't survive in my tank (about 100 pcs of different species lost so far) while other fishes been doing well? plant growth is great with minimum algae. could it be temperature?

I've noticed that if I do a Large water change >20% on my shrimp tanks some shrimps will die, If I do less than 30% the shrimp don't die.

I also noticed shrimps missing after each water changes. I usually change about 20% or less.

Is half teaspoon of KNO3 too much for a 2ft tank?

i think half a teaspoon is dependent also on the type of plants you have and also the maturity of your tank and plants. I dose mine with half teaspoon every 3- 4 day also so i doubt thats the prob. I think the main problem that is causing your shrimp to die is the drastic amounts of water change you make per week. Why not keep it at 30 - 40 % ? 80% is too much to take for them liao. You can experiment, why dont you not change water for 2 weeks and chk ifyou have any casualties after that. I believe you can test it out for yourself

i got two seperate light of 55w each. if you want to diy 2 x 55w in one casing, you have to find a casing which can hold 55w pl tube length first (unless you get longer then two feet lighting), not forgetting you have to add in the ballast too.

Probably OD on the CO2/excel but cramping 100 shrimps into a 2 ft tank is plain asking for trouble. Another issue is getting some surface turnover (just good movement but not ripples).

and also just wanted to add, 40 - 50% is sufficient for any WC, usually i ll go for 50% max, 80% is just too much you destablise water paremeters that way. I mentioned that i do dosing every 4 days right? i change water like once every 4 - 5 weeks or sometimes nearly 2 mths per 40% water change plants still doing ok, fauna all no prob

No, large regular water changes are good for critter health imo/ime. I have no issues with that and regularly do 70-80% large water changes . Something is not right if you have dying critters after every water change. You need to figure out why and such that is happening. Shrimps are more sensitive to low O2, CO2 OD and NH3/NH4.

sorry i didn't make myself clear, 100 over pcs of shrimps was added at about 10-15pcs a time. replenish when all died. actually like to check if OD means overdose, wouldn't the other fishes be gasping for air near the surface? i got no such problem and really need to pump up the co2 to maximum acceptable level. a fan is being used to on the tank since first day and its a well matured tank already.

i have tried doing WC once every two weeks or more but algae seems to attack which i think is due to the fert dosage and high lighting. for my case, weekly WC to reset the tank is essential.

Try the drip method for acclimatizing the critters that juggler aka KF posted. Works very well ime if done slowly and properly. A fan creates too much surface movement ime and causes a lot of CO2 to be wasted but then it is not the issue here for the shrimps rather the algae issue.

Oh, don't add 100 shrimps to a 2ft tank...20 is more than enough for icing on the cake for algae issues but not a cure. Work on the CO2 if you are adding nutrients properly. Do the CO2 addition slowly and not a lot right away. Shrimps die first in the order if CO2 is overdosed.
