How does one tell the difference between Hottonia palustris and Limnophila sessilifora? They look the same in the pictures I see on the net-- same snowflake pattern leaf.
    Warm regards,

Sessiflora has needle liked finer leaves whereas Hottonia is more pinnate. I would say Sessiflora looks similar to Cambomba while Hottonia looks a bit like miniature version of Water Wisteria.

    Cheers!

Thanks for the reply. I've now got both the needle leaved and the thicker leaved plants in my tank now. The needle leaved one I only have one stem whereas the thicker leaved one, I could buy 3 pots from the LFS beside NA.

Seems that the needle leaved one grows real slow -- about 2 inches in the 3+ weeks that I had it. OTOH the thicker leaved one grew 2 inches within 4 days of planting.

Question is, if the needle-leaved one is L. sessilifora, could its growth be stunted because it is a single stem, all alone? Perhaps its lonely so stunts its growth? OTOH, I hope the thicker leaved one which I think is H. palustris slow down its growth.

But if the id is the other way around, then it's back to the search again for the real H. palustris in greater quantity
    Warm regards,

    Lawrence Lee

Erm, Hottonia and Limnophillia look nothing alike.
Hottonia looks like the fine leaved version of Hygrophila difformis which grows real fast.
Hottonia on the other hand.. like a turtle.

    Huh?

Divinity, did you mean L. sessil "looks like the fine leaved version of Hygrophila difformis which grows real fast." ?

My plants seem to behave in the exact opposite manner.

The supposedly H. palustris grew 2 inches after 4 days of planting. Now 2 more days later, it has doubled that growth — a total of 4 inches in 6 days. That's with lower lighting of 2WPG. The L. sessil (needle leaved plant) seem to stagnate. That's why I'm confused with the id.

    The other way round:

Hottonia looks like the fine leaved version of Hygrophila difformis which grows real fast.

They actually look totally different. I agree with Kadios:

My own experience is that their growth is dependant on water condition... both needs high light. But Hottonia is very sensitive to water quality whereas L. Sessiflora is not. Both can grow real fast in high light. L. Sessiflora turns read at the growth tip under some condition
