bro i was there yesterday evening but couldn't find the java fern. which one did you go to at pasir ris farm? is it the one with a fishing pond now? how much did you pay for the java fern?Originally Posted by ms
Hi,
I just bought 10 bunches of Java Fern from Pasir Ris farm yesterday. These were not tied to any wood or rocks. I asked the lady if these could be planted directly onto gravel and was told yes.
I came home and separate them from the Lead piece and foam then planted them onto the gravel.
Can anyone tell me if this is OK?

Ensure the rhizome (the horizontal "trunk" where all the leaves come out from) is not buried. The roots can be buried.
Hi,
the one I was in is next to the Marine stuffs. You did not find any because I had taken about 90% of all the bunched Java Ferns.
As for the planting of the ferns, I buried the Big Root under the gravel. The brown colored root was not long enough. Looks like I have to pull up the plant a little bit.
Question: What will happen if I do not do this?
Thanks for advise!

In my experience, if you bury the rhizome, the present leaves will very slowly die off, while putting out a lot of young plantlets from the spores underneath the leaves.
You won't get any new leaf growth form the rhizome either, which is what we want for Java Fern.
IME, better to plant on little blocks of driftwood. easier to manage and move around if wanna rescape...also can keep rhizome above gravel as squee suggested.
you may need a sandvik saw to carve up small pieces of DW...

I guess ET refers to : Echinodorus Tenellus, the latin name of one kind of a plant.Originally Posted by reebok4190
