For those of you who have white sand/gravel in the front of your aquariums, I have a few questions:

    1) Doesn't the substrate get anaerobic?

    2) Do you vaccum it regularly to keep it clean from fish poo?

    3) What brand do you use?

    4) Any other random tips?

    Thanks!

Just my opinion; long term maintenance with white sand foreground is not easy, there will always be fish poo and debris in the tank and with a white sand foreground, even tiny specks will look prominent.

Take for examples; the tanks in the recent ADA 2005 catalogue. Did you notice Amano term these white sand as "decorative sand", that's what it is, purely aesthetics, I suspect to make the tanks looks good for the submission, the foreground sand are added or replaced with fresh sand, possible a day or two before the photo-shoot, I might be wrong but notice why they look so white and clean?

I'm thinking of rescaping my daughter's cube tank with white sand forground
    1) Doesn't the substrate get anaerobic?
I doubtit will get to be anarobic if these are replace time and again to keep it looking good.

    2) Do you vaccum it regularly to keep it clean from fish poo?
probably, a low bio-load and no driftwood might help to keep it clean.

    3) What brand do you use?
no brand, those pack in unlabel plastic bags.

    4) Any other random tips?
    none at the moment

hmmm, might start a grand parent tank too don't you think? Senior citizen likes to look at nice and natural scenes too you know. Helps them to relax and forget the stress and pain. Need a 4ft tank for that.

Terence, what I did for my 2 feet tank with white gravel is too keep a low bioload. I only had 4 cherry barbs, 1 platy and some otos and yamatos. The poo is usually unnoticable. DW can be used, just make sure you try to bleed it of it's tannin acids before introduction into the tank.

I've since rescaped my tank with white sand and here are my thoughts:

Weekly maintainence is almost necessary; vacumming and pushing stray bits of stuff under the sand to hide it. Otherwise it really gives the tank a "clean" feel.

I think the trick is to have a very thin layer of it, makes life easier.

Erh, kind of apprehensive to show it now since it's still at baby stages. But it's very much simliar to my present one in my signature.

Europet has nice riversand, almost similar to ADA's Rio Negro sand, but at a fraction of the cost.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Lol, not so stunning now man. The thing is littered with my new Oto's and shrimp's dung. Hats off really to those who maintain white foregrounds. Not that I'm complaining...

I scrubbed the driftwood and took the opportunity to get rid of the Aquasoil. Weirdly, the water seems clearer now. It's a whole new tank, but with almost the same scape.

To add, it's "wonderful" when green-dust-like algae starts growing on the white sand...

I tried using white sand for foreground before, and what a headache! Seems that my fishes are using the sand as a targetboard to offload their poo. Bombs away. I got so frustrated in the end that I just got rid of the white sand...
Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

I'm also using white river sand. Just wondering if keeping shrimps will help to keep the substrate clean?
