Open-air exhibition with pictures displayed on giant boards along the walkways of Orchard Road, nearer to Wheelock Place by renowned French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

    About Nature and About Earth.

IMO, it is worth reading the little text below the photos.

I caught a glimpse of it while driving by. Pretty large prints and looks quite interesting.

    Cheers,

How does he achieve such rich colours in his print? Is it the kind of film he uses? I imagine he employs a really really wide angle lens as well.

Well, marc....and the rest who is interested...He uses Canon Professional Equipment....for this project, he shot film...I think Fuji Provia or something...

I would imagine aerial photography really require a very fast lens...that's what I though when I was viewing his works that day. True enough, when I checked on his website...he uses a 70-200 L f2.8 IS! You surely don't want any camera shake due to the rotation of the heicopter...

Anyhow, the exhibition really serve to remind us how fragile our world is.

Really wide (or ultra) angle lens may not work for aerial photography. If it was shot on chrome (slides) film, Fuji Velvia is know to produce such rich colors that you see. Kodak produceds colors which are more natural.

Some excerpt from his website on his photographic equipment.

The particular quality of a photograph owes something to technical choices made in ways of camera backs, film, lighting... The photographer’s know how is evident there too but, as Yab always says, this is not essential.
“Amateurs are always anxious to know what equipment we use, so let’s play along... Still, in my views, all cameras are equally good; I work with Canon because they have been second family to me for the last 20 years; they listen when I have a problem and do their best to solve it.”
Here, then, is a rapid inventory of photographic equipment used on the different projects.

    For The Earth from above

Yab has always worked with CANON and PENTAX equipment.

For this particular project cameras used are CANON EOS-IN equipped with L series lenses ranging from 14 mm to 400 mm, with a marked preference for the 17/35 mm 2.8, 70/200 mm 2.8 and 200 mm 1.8.

Helicopter vibrations make it necessary to work at high speed, between 1/250 and 1/1000.

The photos require a bright optical quality, for the team uses FUJICHROME Velvia 50 ASA film, always slightly underexposed so as to saturate colours, pushing it by one diaphragm if necessary.

For an ideal exposure, light is systematically controlled with a MINOLTA spot meter.

Most shots are in 24 x 36 mm format, to be printed on FUJICOLOR Crystal Archive type CP paper.

    For portrait work

In the studio, Yab uses a Pentax 645N with 120 and 45/85 mm lenses.

He remains faithful to FUJICHROME Astia film for its softness and fleshy tones generally warmed up a bit.

A test is done systematically with a Polaroid FUJI FP 100 C.

In addition, the team has opted for GODARD flashes for indoor work, and NORMAN ones for outdoors.

    Printing

The team works on a regular basis with the processing firms JANJAC and RUSH-LABO in Paris.
